Milton. Sept. 1G. Your corres pondent nt this place visited the electric power plant on the south fork of the Walla Walla river recent ly. The dam, which Is 13 miles from Milton, Is of solid concrete and Is put In. In such a shape that It will stand for aces. First a trench or excavation about 40 feet long, 5 feet deep at the lower end. and 12 at the upper, was made; on the bottom of this heavy timbers were placed In solid masonry, then a layer of stone and timber, all bolted and cemented together until within a few feet of the bottom of the river. even with the top of the flume. Around this large plies were driven to guard off brush and floating tim bers that might Injure the dam or flume during high waters. The grade for the flume to lie on Is on the south side of the canyon. i and Is seven miles long. It follows a gradual grade and will, when com pleted, empty Into a large reservoir 4 no feet above the river on the hill side Two and a half miles of the flume, which Is four feet. In diameter and bound with hoops made of round rods, every eight or 10 Inches, Is completed. There are six gangs of 10 men each, working on this part of the work, completing about 100 feet each In 12 hours. The work goes on night and day. The flume Is not laid on a grade ex actly level, but In deep canyons, In some places curves down 120 feet and rises on the other side only a few feet below the opposite. In such places the hoops are placed not more than six. and as close as three Inches apart. The timbers are all hoisted to the grade on a cable, with a large donkey engine, and carried awuy on a track, on cars or dump, which Is laid for the purpose. There are about 200 men working along the line at the present time, and In order to complete the work by the first of the year the force will be doubled. The water, when the plant Is com pleted, will run down through an Iron flume or casing to the power house on the side of the hill, a distance of about 1200 feet, and will be regulated at the reservoir with valves. The poles are nearly all up from Walla Walla to Pendleton and the wires on to Walla Walla. The manager ,es;l mates the cost .at from $750,000 to n. ooo.ooo. MII.TOX WAXTS 111(111 SCItOOIi. The high school proposition In Milton hns become a serious on?, and will be taught this year If money has to be raised by subscription. There are somewhere near 20 eighth grade pupils that are barred from school, on account of finances, that would be In school if the dis trict supported a high school. Those In favor of a high school were thwart ed nt the last school meeting, but a petition has been circulated and an other meeting called for September 30. At this meeting It will be thorough ly discussed, and no doubt will carry. If not. the board of directors will add the grade or grades and have It taught, anyway. Something over $200 has already been subscribed for that purpose, and as much more enn be easily raised. A Uo's Wild Rldo for Life.
