The Holdmun Socialist Club, which was In existence last winter, will be revived again, and a debating society will be formed. Johnston has been employed to teach In the Union school, north west of Pendleton, John Armstrong left on the morn ing train for Salem, where he will visit the state fair. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Carlson, of Kn mela, left for home this evening, after n week's visit here. T. J. Kirk and wife left last night for their home nt Athena after a short business trip In the city. Albert Cohen of the Peoples Ware house, departed last night for Port land to be absent several days. Albert Harala, manager of the Ha vana warehouse, was In town yester day, returning to Havana this morn ing. Dines Turner and J. A. Blakley will go to Portland tonight, and will attend the state fair at Salem before returning, n. K. Davis has returned from his trip to the coast, having been absent three weeks. Mrs. Davis Is still with friends In Portland. j Miss Anna G. Humphrey, of Fall I Creek, Or., is In Pendleton. Miss Humphrey Is a school teacher nnd may remain in this county. Charles J. Gray, traveling passen- I ger ngent for the Chicago & Xorth- I western railway, with headquarters in Portland, is In Pendleton on busi ness. F. A. Tnppe of Kansas City, man ager of the Buffalo Hny Press Co., Is In town on his annual visit, com ing here from Boise, and will go to Portland. Fred Benge and wife returned to Starbuck tills morning. They have been the guests of Charles Harnett and family. Mr. Benge Is a brother of Mrs. Burnett. George Taylor, traveling passenger agent for the Wisconsin Central, wltli headquarter In Portland, was In Peudletun this morning cm bis way to Wulla Walla. Mr. und Mrs. George Glnn of Wal la Walla, passed through Pendleton last night on their way to St. Louis to visit the fair. Mr. Glnn has farm lug interests near Weston nnd at Spofford. Frank Greullch and wife left this morning for Salem and the state fair. After the fair they will visit other points In the Western part of the state, and will be absent about three weeks. J. W. Roork and L. C. Stevens, who have been working here and in this vicinity, returned to Portland this morning. The former is a brother of Charles Roork, and friend of John Hurl. Chris Stnnull has Just returned from a two months' visit to the Sound and other coast points. He finds no place presenting the same business opportunity as Pendleton, and is glad to be at home again. Miss Ada Smith left for The Dalles this morning. She lias been visiting In Walla Wulla. with Miss Mary Decker, who accompanied her to this place, returning home this morning. Both have many friends In Pendle ton. C. S. Collier, son of P. P. Collier, is expected almost dally to arrive from an extended trip through the Interior. After visiting with rela tives here for a few days he will go to Portland to resume post graduate studies in dentistry. Miss Lelali Offner of Wulla Walla, was In Pendleton last night en route to Oberlln, O., where she will enter Oberlln College. Miss Offner Is a graduate of the Walla Walla high school. She Is the daughter of W. S. Offner, a prominent commission mer chant. A. F. Leonard and wife of Port land, were the guests of H. E. Bickers yesterday, going north on the morn ing truln to Garfield. Mr. Leonard was a friend of Mr. Bickers in Sa lem, while the latter wan superinten dent of the reform school. Mr. und Mrs. Leonard are on their wedding trip. THANKSGIVING HALL. Pendleton Hook and Ladder Compa ny Fix Date for Event. Rescue Hook and Ladder Company No. 1, of tlUs city, met last night and decided to give a fireman's grand ball at Music Hall on Thanksgiving eve, Wednesday, November 23, The affair will be made the lead ing social event of the coming win ter. A committee on arrangements was appointed last night, ns follows: T. T. Nelson, chairman; Charles Cole, and A. Rhode. Bringing In Ituiuhoiilllct Rums. C. P. Granger of Dayton, Is In the county ns agent for R. A. Jackson, one of the most extensive Washington sheep raisers. He will bring over from the Wallowa country a band of Ramboulllot rams with the intention of selling them to Umatilla sheep men. The class which graduated last spring from the Pendleton high school seems to have been composed of as ambitious nnd aspiring young people ns perhaps any class of equal size that ever left the Pendleton schools or any other high school In tile state. Every member has an abiding ambition to get a higher ed ucation, though not all can gratify their Intentions tills year, while others deem It best to take up busi ness for a time, or for other reasons postpone active school work. The coming year will see the various members of the class disposed as follows: Roy Alexander will put In his time the coming year In the Alexander Department Store, with a business career as Ids ultimate ambition, after a university training later on. Will Wyrlck's intention to attend a university the coming year has been temporal lly frustrated by the accident which cost him the larger part of his left bund, and which upset many of his plans. However, he will continue his studies to some extent, and take a post graduate course under Prof. Conklln's direc tions. Miss Chloe Stanfleld will attend Whitman college. Miss Bertha Alexander will attend St. Helen's Hall, at Portland the fa mous ladles' seminary under the management of the stute organiza tion of the Episcopal church. Dell McCarty will attend the State University at Eugene the coming year, with the Intention of graduat ing. He will take the historic and economic course, In preparation for the study of law. Fred Hartman will also attend the Stute University. James Reeves, Se Williams, Myrtle Disney und Nell Jay will attend the Washington Stute Agricultural Col lege at Pullman the coming year, where the Misses Disney und Jay will make u speolulty of domestic science, Fred Vincent will attend the Washington Stute University, at Se attle, and make u specialty of ap plied electric science. Miss Ivy Klmbrell intends to take up an advanced course in drawing and music at u Portland Institution exclusively devoted to those branches, Ed Jay will spend the winter with the firm of Brock & McC'omas, und will probably follow pharmacy as a profession, Sound business practice is as important, here, as the wealth of nature.
