New Express System Cannot Be Put Into Operation Until Power Plant Is Completed, As Electric Power Cannot Be Supplied Now to Charge Additional Batteries New Switch board Being Built In San Francisco Will Require Two Horse Power to Operate and Light the New Board. Inspecting Engineer Elam Miller, of the Pacific States Telephone Com pany, with headquarters in San Fran cisco, was in the city yesterday In specting the telephone system here ami giving final directions concerning the changes that are helng made now. The Installation of the now express system of 'phones here depends alto gether on .the completion of the now electric light plant, as It is absolutely necessary to have more power with i which to charge the larger batteries of the now system before it can be put in operation. .Mechanics are now working on the new switchboard for the Pendleton of fice, to be used In the express system, nnd It will be ready for use In a short tlmo. It Is a large and very compli cated affair, and its operation will require the services of an extra man in the Pendleton central offices. Mr. .Miller Is well pleased with the outlook of Pendleton and vicinity and I said his company will furnish this city one of the best telephone system in tho United States, as soon as the electric power is available for charg ing the batteries. It will require about two horse power to operate and light the switchboard. It will be one of the finest boards over turned out of the mechanical department of the Pacific States company. .Mr. .Miller Iett this morning for lowiston. where the Pacific States people aro also making extensive changes and improvements.
