INDIA'S WHEAT CROP. Export for 1904 Will Be Almost Double That of 1903. R. F. Patterson, American consul at Calcutta, India, sends the following resume of tho Indian wheat crop to the department of commerce and la bor: According to the government's final memorandum on the wheat crop of 1H03-4 the season bus been exception ally favorable for wheat, and the good crop of last year has been exceeded by 20 per cent in area and 21 per cent In yield. In tho principal wheat growing tracts of Northern India, where the crop Is most prolific and from which the supplies for export are so largely drawn,' the area Is tho largest on rec ord, the excess over the highest other year being !)75,000 acres in the United Provinces and 3Ct),000 acres in the Punjab, where cultivation extend ed on the Cheuab und Jhelum canals. In tho matter of yield this crop stands pre-eminent, and tho total, 9, 390,000 tons, is 1,000,000 tons more than the large crop of 1902-3. The crop has beeu lea-st successful In Bombay, but fortunately the unfavor able conditions were most prevalent where the urea In wheat Is not Im portant, and Slnd has had an extreme ly good crop. The exports of wheat the last fivo years have been as follows; in 1899 1900, 485,204 tons; 1900-1901, 2.501 tons; 1901-J1902, 3CC.091 tons; 1902 1903. 514,007 tons; 1903-1904, 1,295,500 tons. Judging by the quantity exported from laBt year's crop (1,295,500 tons, or nearly 54,308,000 bushels) tho ex port from the crop of this year In which there have been large crops of all food grains, releasing wheat from home consumption should bo more than double that quantity, which will go to Europe and come Into compe tition with tho wheat exported from the United States. It. P. Patterson, Consul General, Calcutta. India. June 9, 1904. GERMAN EGG TEST. Certain Method of Determining the Age of Eggs. A new und simple method for test ing eggs is published In German pa purs. It ls based upon the fact that the air chamber In tho flat end of the egg increases with age. If the egg Is placed In a saturated solution of com mon salt It will show an increasing Inclination to float with the long axis vertical. A scale Is attached to the vessel containing the salt solution so that the Inclination of the floating egg to ward tho horizontal can be measured, In this way the age of the egg ran be determined almost to a day. A fresh egg lies In a horizontal position at the bottom of the vessel; an egg from three to five days old shows an eleva tion of the flat end, so that Its long axis forms an angle of 20 degrees, With an egg eight days old the angle Increases to 45 degrees; with an egg 14 days old to GO degrees, and with one three weeks old to 76 degrees, while an egg a month old floats verti cally upon tho pointed end. Richard Guenther, Consul General, Pranltfort, Germany, July C, 1904. Personally Conducted Excursion to St. Louis. On September 0 tho O.
