Some sneak thief carried off 20 feel

The demand for houses hero this
fall has caused tho report to bo cir
culated that the inonlcd men of the
town were going to organize a build
ing and loan association this fall; but
we fear it will be like the electric
railroad and cold storage plant talk.
Charlie Ingle, "Rud" and Archie
Bolus are each suffering with sep
tncmina of a hand, caused by n bruise
from a fork handle.
A colored preacher was in this vi
cinity one day Inst week trying to
make arrangements to hold a series
of meetings in the near future. Fall
ing to create interest enough in Mil

people of that town raised enough to

which place he departed for on tho

F. B. Pennock, principal of tho

Among the visitors in town we no-

Merle Roby of Brownsville, who has
been connected with the Milton Fur

In this vicinity this month the fol
lowing births have been reported
since our last writing, all being boys:
To Mr. and Mrs. Ingle, and to Mr. and
Mrs. Slater, on the tenth; Mr. and
Mrs. R. E. Record, on the seventh;
Mr. and Mrs. Charlc3 Davis on the

Two Little Girls Hurt.
W. S. Mayberry's little 4-year-old
girl caught her arm in the cogs of a
clothes wringer a few days ago, caus
ing a painful but not dangerous
wound. On the same day the little
G-ycar-old girl of E. Deub fell on a
board, running a largo splinter in her
left breast, causing a painful wound.
Both are getting along nicely, and no
serious results are likely to arise in
either case.

"Of all the worlds I ever broke Into
Ibis one's the most curious," said Bed
Saunders, '-und one of the curlousest
things In it Is that 1 think It's queer.
Why should I. now? What puts it in
to our heads that affairs ought to go so
and so when they never do anything
of the sort? Take any book you read
or any story a man tells you. It ruus
along nuout how .Mr. Smith nindo up
his mind lo do this or that nnd pro
ceeded to do it. And that never hap
pened. What Mr. Smith calls making
up his mind Is, when you come dowu
to bed rock, nothing more nor less than
what Mr. Smith pleasantly cnlla his
mind dodging lo cover under pressure
of circumstances. That's straight. Old
Lady Luck comes for Mr. Smith's mind

When Doctors Were slaves.
Romans of means had physicians lu
their own houses. These men wero
slaves, for, odd as it seems, many Ro
man slaves were accomplished In liter
ature, art nnd science. At one time the
Belling price of a slave doctor wus
uuoui mo equivalent or 30U in our
money.
After tho time of Julius Caesar, who
encouraged physicians, tho art began
to "lift Its head" in Rome, and later
men or character and position, thoutth
generally foreigners, entered tho pro
fession. Some of them accumulated
largo fortunes, and one made the equiv

Boston, Mass., Aug. 15. Over 30,-

of the great nnnunl reunion as tho ex

and entertainment of tho veterans,
Today tho crowd was several times
as large. Tho streets downtown
wero crowded early in tho morning,
and most of the people who w.cre out
wero strangers. Every train arriv
