But Grownup People, Most of Them, Are More or Less Insane.. There Is one disadvantage which i Involved In the very tint tire of educa tionthat is. that we have to ukxuuic that grownup people are representa tive. We have even to go the length of assuming that grownup people are sane. When wo tall; about encouraging health In children and discouraging morbidity, when we talk of such and such a child being abnormal or lute estlng or neurotic or a genius, we are all the time taking for granted that wo ourselves have attained to what is profitable and eternal In human nature. Jtut there is at least something that may reasonably bo said upon the other side. It may at Unit very plausibly be lmilntalueil that It Is children who ure. uge after age. snnc and reliable and grownup people who are. uge aft er age, more or mss fantastic mid dis concerting. The great majority of grownup people In any age will be In all probability s-llghtly insane; for since no human philosophy Is perfect, anil since every human philosophy natural ly treats Itself as If It were perfect, the chances are in every generation that the majority of edm-iited people will he ecstatically certain of something that is quite untrue. Children, on tho other hand, it might be maintained, repre sent the actual primary and untouched human nature. Whatever agrees with that Is sane; whateer disastrous with it Is eccentric. Children are nlwnys children, or. to limit the matter with more precision, babies, ut any rato. are always babies. Hut few will be so paradoxical as to maintain that men are always men or women always wo-meu.-Hlack and White. End of Dltter Fight.
