It leads and the people appreciate It and show It by their liberal patronage. It Is the advertising medium of this section. In company with T. G. Hallcy a rop rcaontntlvo of tho East Oregonlau took a trip over tho reservation yesterday. Tho farmers aro wearing tho smllo thnt won't como off, and thoy hav,o good causo to. Tho reservation wheat fields nover looked better. As far ns ono can sec stretches n vast expanse of yellow-brown wheat. It stands In many fields level with ouo'8 shoulders. Tho head Is largo and tho berry full and plump. Many of tho fields aro going the es timated average. Among tho lino fluids visited were Snyder's, John Crow's, L. Mann's, A. M. Jack's, W. H. H. Scott's and others. Georgo Barnhart's field which has Just been threshed ran 37 bushels av erage for the 200 acres. A. D. llluo's 160 acres run 35 bush els. These two were good yields but were not .exceptions, as others visited will exceed 40 bushels an acre. Combine at Work. On tho farm recently purchased from Mr, ltlgby a stop was mado to watch a ltlgby-Clovo comblno work ing. Arthur ltlgby was In tho con ning tow.er and tho 16 mules seemed to move along without any great amount of effort. Mr. Clove, who was watching the work of the combine, said that tho field would probably go nearly 10 bushels to tho acre, as it Is a very cholco piece of wheat land. Not far distant from this field could be seen a combine with 2G horses in V H. H. Scott's grain. At our next stopping place wo found A. M. Jack. Ho has 130 acres uf loased laud that has a splendid crop. About 10 acres had been threshed. "If It keeps up all over tho field as It has for this 10 acres, ltwlll run over 4 Obushels to tho acre," said Mr. Jack. The Harvest Scene. To a pcrsou who has nover watch ed a wheat crop being gathered tho process Is a very Interesting one. Two headers circle round tho field heading tho wheat. Each of meso headers aro attended by four wagons which drive along beside the header and recclvo the headed grain. The header" wagon Is driven beside the platform of the threshing machine, a hook Is attached to tho net and In 30 seconds tho wagon Is empty, a horse being tho motive power that empties tho nets. Tho "hoe-down" men keep a steady stream of the headings going down tho rapacious and capacious maw of tho thresher. At tho rear a largo stacker keeps a stream of straw In tho air. Tho fun nel from which tho straw Is dis charged can bo moved In any desired direction to form tho straw stacks. Tho straw Is used as fuel in the en gine. A man being constantly employ- ed In forking tho straw into mo ror-mice. As wo stood watching tho busy sceno a header wagon drc up In charge of a fullblood Umatilla Indian. In ntiBWor to n question Mr. Jack said: "His namu Is Georgo Thomas and ho Is u good hand. I pny him $2,50 a day for himself and team. "Wo have got this thing down to a pretty good system. You see, wo burn the straw as fuel, that saves carrying wood or coal and cuts out a largo Hem of expense, "Wo havo dispensed with tho straw Imckers, the stacker docs that with no oxpens.o and much more satisfactory. Ily using the nets on tho header wag ons wo cut out the lnbor of pitching the load from the wngotiB. "W.o move four times In a quarter section, 10 acres being as largo a ter ritory os It pays to work at ono set ting. Moving Is a short operation. Tho elevator is on wheels. Tho on glno pulls tho threshing machine. Tho 'cook wagons, water tanks and other paraphernalia are readily moved and tho spouts are inuring out their steady stream of wheat again beforo you know It. "We havo got It down to a system llko moving n circus. Tho only loss to tho farmer Is the straw. Hut thoy usually pasturo tho stublilollold till spring and then burn the stubblo and plow If under. . "If It could be plowed under, of course, It would bo better for tho laud, as It would return to tho land the straw, but It Is hard to work the straw under." Scene Worthy of Artist's Srush. It Is an Inspiring sight to stand on somo high point and look over the waving miles of wheat nodding In tho evening breeze. Much of It, though five feet high, seems lovul enough and thick enough to walk upon. Diversified Farming. Many a man has mado n stake on one or two good wheat crops from land leased from th.o Indians. Hero and there fields may bo seen whero the what has boon bound and shocked for grain hay. Hero and there aro fields of barley or oats. Polydoro Moons has SO acres of po tatoes that are thrifty and vigorous and bid fair to make a largo crop. In stead of summer fallowing somo ot tho more progressive fnrmers aro us ing tho rotation of crop system. Potatoes, for cxamplo, will produce a good crop and more than pay for tho preparation of tho summer fallow. As an ovldenco of tho way In which tho ground retains Its moisture in almost ov.cry Hold wo ontorod tho sollkHoemod dry on tho surfneo, yot thrco or four Inches bolow It Hhowed molsturo. Tho earth clinging to tho roots of tho wheat when puilod up, was damp. Deep plowing and thorough cultiva tion Is tho secret of. retaining tho mois ture. ' "I novor saw llnor wheat," said the E. O. mnn .onthuslastlcally, ns ho looked nt tho full-headed, Bhouhlor high wheat In L. 1 Mann's nold. "For tho very good reason," answered Mr. Hnlloy, "that they don't grow better wheat than thnt nnywhere." "Wo hnvo pnaacd fields of whent that will run 50 bushola to tho aero and whoro tho hends will avorago from two to four and n half feet abovp tho ground. "If you enn toll mo whore finer wheat land Is to bo found, or whoro ono can seo finer wlymt, I would ho glad to know. I know men who camo hero five years ago and started to farming on leased land, who can draw tholr check for $25,000 now." To nny person who has an oyo for tho beautiful a glanco over mllo on mllo of tho golden brown wheat nod ding In th.o ovonlng breeze Is an In spiration. Fred I.ockloy.
