Forshaw's Improvements.
S. H. Forshaw has nearly completed
the first of the three greenhouses
which he will erect this summer and
fall. It is 1Gx28 on the ground, and
all that It now lacks or being complet
ed Is the setting of the glass. He
will not start the other greenhouses
until his new residence Is far enough
advanced to be occupied In part. Res
idences and greenhouses are at the
corner of Court and Star. 10 blocks
west of Main.
Gypsy Picnic at Meacham.
A genuine gypsy picnic will be held
at Meacham tomorrow. A barbecue,
plutform danco, music by the La
Grande band and a general good time
and unique program will be enjoyed.

THE SIGNAL LIGHT.
Opening Attraction of the Engage
ment of Margarita Fischer Com
pany. "The Signal Light." the opening
play of the Margarita Fischer Compa
ny, is one of the strongest melo-dra-matlc
military plays ever written. It
Is a story of "love and war" between
the North and the South; a young
federal officer, Captain Blanchard, has
been wounded and taken prisoner by
a company or Confederate soldiers.
They stop to rest on the way to
Libby prison at a place called "Lyn
wood." There he meets an old sweet
heart, Lucille Carlyle, a sister of Col
onel Edwin Carlyle, of the Confeder
ate army.
She secretes her lover In the house
until the guard has passed. Unfortu
nately, Blanchard is recognized by
Colonel Carlyle as a man who struck
him a blow in the face a year pre
vious in Louisville. They quarrel
again and come to blows, when one
Dudley Middleton, a Confederate of
ficer who is also In love with Miss
Carlyle attempts to stab Blanchard in
the back, but by a sudden turn he
kills his own friend.
Meantime one Ellas Rastus Confu-
scions Carter, 'a correspondent lor a
London paper, appears on the scene
and sketches the struggle. Blanchard
Is puzzled to know how the man
came to his death, feeling that he,
himself, Is innocent. He goes to the
grief-stricken sister and confesses to
the quarrel, but maintains his lnno
cence. She takes an oath of ven
geance on the murderer of her broth'
er, "whoever he may be."
Middleton. to protect himself, has
Carter placed under arrest as a spy
and blames the murder on Blanchard.
She is influenced to send for her lover
ami betray him Into the hands of the
Confederates, which she does by plae
ins a signal light in the window.
Miss Kate Wllmarth, a Creole girl,
who has been played false by Mid
dleton, betrays him in his schemes,
and assisted by the artist correspon
dent, thev save Blanchard at the last
minute.

Chief Delaney received a letter from
Chief Hunt Tuesday night relative to
the matter and yeMerday every patrol
man was given a description of the
stolen goods with instructions to keep
a lookout for them.
The members of the staff of the
governor of Oregon went into camp
with paraphernalia of every descrip
tion. The staff officers were quartered at
Murray very near to a troop of regu
lar cavalry. It was a colored troop
and the sight of so much war appara
tus that could be carried away was
too much for the colored troopers,
A watermelon natch would nave
caused less trouble In the ranks. Sil

temptations that could not ue witn-
stood. The stuff Just kept disappearing.
Sixty to the Beach.

complied by him. Mr. Hawkins visit
ed this place some three or four years
ago and roped in a number of citizens
on exactly the same plan, at $20 per.
The scheme Is not denounced by
the victims as an out-and-out swindle,
but those who Invested do claim that
the price paid was out of all propor
tion to the value of tho returns, In
other words, that the books are "dead
horse." and ar.e not fully what they
were represented to be. Some even
claim that whoover wishes can obtain
of his congressman, under the franking-
privilege, and by an outlay of a
two-cent stamp and tho trouble of
writing tho request, any of the docu
ments contained in the Tom Itlchnrd
boii compilation, and that If bo wishes
all of them, and has the patience to
write for them, that he oin get all
of them. In other words, It the scheme
Is not a swindle out and out, it cer
tainly Is a big graft.
The assertion-Is made that Mr.
Hawkins is, careful to avoid making
himself conspicuous on this trip, and
that he does not renew the acquaint
ances he made on his former tour to
this place, It would bo interesting to
know bow many men ho listed as sub
scribers to the compilation, by the
above appeal to the vanity of those
who supposed they had been selected
as subjects for a special literary dle-
pensatlon by the authorities In the
government printing department
J. V Tallman, Dr. C. J Smith and
other prominent citizens have been
selected as special marks by Mr.
Hawkins, and the plan seems to be of
general scope.
