Just a month more than a year ago,
Pendleton nbandoned n Fourth of July
celebration and donated the celebra
tion fund to Hoppner's sufforcrs from
the cloudburst. Peudlottm remem
bers the deed with pride and feels
that she was Immeasurably more ben
efited by giving to a needy neighbor
than she would have been by a cel
ebration. The public gift to Hcppner
has been supplemented by numberless
private gifts to needy cities, the diff
erent lodges of Pendleton having sent
a large sum to Ilaltiiuorc. after her
destruction. The latest call for pub
lic charily comes from Mitchell,
Wheeler county, which was almost
swept from the may by a cloudburst
on July 11. Mitchell was a small,
struggling Interior town, with a
sparse settlement around It nud prob
ably needs assistance vory much.
Pendleton will help her sister as she
responds to every call, and so on
down the years will the fortuua'te con
tribute to the unfortunate, the strong
will aid the weak and charity will
ever bo the brightest Jewel in the
crown of civilization.
