HOP ESTIMATES.
per bunch, 3 for. Recent Rains Will Largely Increase
the Yield,
There Is no (luestloning tho fact
that the r.ecent generous downpour of
rain did the growing hop crop a won
derful amount of good, says the Sa
lem Statesman. Some hop men say
I that the welcome moisture, will have
I a tendoney to revive tho yards which
are suffering so severely on account

be Increased by several thousand
bales thereby, T. A. I.lvesley placing
tho Increase at 10,000 bales, while
others are agreed that the rain came
too late to do these yards any good,
und that In many of the old yards,
whereon tho hop-producing arms had
I begun to sprout, theso arms had been
irrcparauiy unmngeu anu wore urop
ping off by the thousands.
The total yield for the stat.e has
been variously estimated ut from 05,
000 to 80,000 bales, but It Is thought
that the latter figure will come nearer
the truth, Some dealers think the
1904 markot will open at 25 cents for
choice hops, while others say that, In
I their estimation, 20 cents will be a
pretty good opening figure.
DEEPEN NEW YORK HARBOR.
Launching of Big Steamer Baltic Dis
closes Startling Condition.
New York, July 21. The recent de
parture of the gigantic now liner
Baltic on Its first return trip demon
strated an interesting feature. Tho
steamer was compelled to start out
with a light load, about five or six
thousand tons less than Its capacity,
to bo ablo to got out of the harbor.
With a full load tho Baltic draws
about SC feet of water, from four to
five more than tho depth of the water
at tho bar. Ev.on at 32 feet It Is a
risky thing for tho onormous steam
ship to cross the bar. It more steam
ers of such enormous capacity and
depth are to be built, it will bo nec
essary to Increase the depth of water
In tb.o channel and particularly at tho
bar.
Tho work Is slowly progressing, but
It is believed that it will bo about four
years before the wator will bo aeop
enough to onablo steamers of tho slz.o
and capacity of tho Baltic to pass in
und out with full loads.
