About once a year, a searching In
vestigation or tho train department Is
made by the olllclals, to ascertain If
brakemen are carrying hoboes in box
cars, and every man under suspicion,
is discharged. Within the past week
several brakemen so suspected have
been discharged and others expect to
go soon.
Th box-car passenger business is
one of the bad habits of railroad
freight brakemen, all roads being
bothered with the practice moro or
less.
About half of the laborers that
travel from place to placo over the
country, travel In box cars, paying
the brakeman, If they aro willing to
accept It, about half fare, or whatever
price can be agreed upon. Tho prac
tice oncouragos laborers to travel
this way. to avoid paying full fnre,
and thus reduces the legitimate pas
senger business of tho company to a
large extent.
It nlso yields a handsome income to
the brakeman, as often the fares thus
collected amount to double the
wuges they receive, although brake
men receive in wages on the mountain
division nbout $3.25 per 100 miles,
making $3.73 for tho trip from I.a
(irande to Umatilla, a distance of 118
miles, or 57.40 for the round trip.
Not ninny of the O. It. & N. brake
men follow tho practice, as they aro
men of families, located In 'their own I
homes in I.a Grande, and respect the
rules of the road, as they expect to '
remain permanently In the employ of
the company.
The box-car passenger business Is
principally confined to "boomer," or
transient brakemen, who work only a
short time In a placo and mako tho
best of the job while working. This
class Is kept on the move by tho dif
ferent companies, who discharge them 1
on learning their practices. I
