Virtue Mine Will Reopen, The Inrgest mining deal of tho sea son and perhaps tho only one ever closed here without a bond being given on either side was that yester day says tho Baker City Democrat of tho 28th, when the Virtue Mines & Development Co. paid $115,000 In cash to the old Virtue 'Mining Co., and Issued stock to those who re mained In the company bringing tho totnl purchase price up to ?2B0,00O. The deal Is of particular Interest to linker City and county, not from a financial point of view, but from the Interesting history connected with this old property, which first made famous the gold camps of Eastern Oregon. The remnrkablo history of the Virtue mine has been written many times and Is qulto familiar to all Orogonlnns. It is sufficient to say hero thnt It was first discovered about lSOl by n pony express rider, and slnco then has had many ups nnd downs. Baker Democrat. Red Boy Still Incubating. There has boon no further definite Information of late regarding the plans of tho purchasing syndicate of tho Red Boy mine That they aro progressing favorably In formation of the now company, and tho most of tho old stockholders will come In on tho basis of 0 cents per share of the old stock, is believed, but none of those In authority bus made state ment to this effect. Whether the old stockholders do come In or not. It is safe to stnte that the money required for deep work and to liquidate indebt edness will be forthcoming nt an early date. Sumpter Reporter. Only a Hackdrlver. Tho "romantic" wedding of Grace Wright, a Union county girl, to a "millionaire," which the Baker City nnd Union papers have exploited so voluminously, falls Hat. The "million aire" did chores for his hoard last winter at the hotel owned by Miss Wright's father, and he turns out to bo a hackdrlver, which Is no disgrace, If he Is a good one. no small comfort to pilings Best on call! 1 grocer s ; a pity one It everything such .and CENSUS FIGURES 13 SUPPLY YOU WITH lilting laterial fusion lumber of all de pis. "nWu, try tho Tender- Notably Interesting and significant aro' some of the figures presented In an abstract of the tenth census, Just published by the department of com merce. Few realize that the native born population In 10 years rose 22 per cent and the foreign bom less than 12 per cent. It Is apparent "hard times" were the chief causae of the comparative decrease of the foreign horn iMipulntlou. As a matter of fact tho actual num ber of English, Irish, Herman nnd French residents or the United States decreased In these 10 years, while Poles, Hungarians, ltusslans nnd Ital ians Increased by a largo percentage. Not entirely disconnected with tho decline in Immigration Is the pleas ing demonstration by figures that il literacy in tho United States Is de creasing. Even with the Increase in population of more than 20 per cent from 1890 to WOO, the number of Il literates foil nearly 150,000 in the de cade. Yet, oven In 1900. there were C.180,000 persons 10 years old or more In tho United States unablo to read or write. Willie the negroes In the South ure largely responsible for this huge to tal there are still n,200,000 whites In the Illiterate class. Of forelgu born illiterates New York state has 268.000 or almost 20 per cent of the total In tho country. But the Empire state has In nddltlon 47, 000 natives who cannot read or write. In view of tho immense throng of im migrants that settle In Now York state. It Is one of tho surprising fncts that the percentage of increase of na tive born In 10 years slightly exceeded the percentage of Increase of foreign born. The showing Is contrary to that of nearly every other populous East ern state. What might bo called family stalls, tics presont some novel phases. An exhibit pleasing to the social reformer is n- demonstration that the average number of persons to n dwelling is falling. Thus, In 1900 It was 5.3 per sons, whllo In 1890 It was 5.C. Judging from the figures, tho Pa cific coast states are the best for mar rlngeable women, CO per cent being wives, against 59 per cent In the Cen trnl West, nnd 51 por cent In tho East. Contrariwlso, tho Pacific coast sIiowb the smallest percentage of mar ried mon 15 por cent, against a gen oral averago of 55 per cent In the East nnd Middle- West. Tho mortality statistics show that tho incroaso in pnoumonla deaths from 1890 to 1900 was 5 por cent: or heart disease, 12 por cent; of kidney disease, 44 per cent, of apoploxy, 17 por cent: of cancer 12 per cont. On tho other hand, tho figures show a decrease in deaths from consump BUSINESS CARDS, SOCIETIES PROFESSIONS AND TRADES PHYSICIANS. DH. V. (J. COLE, OFFICE IV Ji nn building. Office hour..
