Raised, and Also on School Furniture.
1'rluter's proofs of the now freight
tariffs have arrived In Spokane, says
tho Spokesman-Hovlow, and several
changes aro made In them raising the
rates received In tho city about a
week and a half ago. Tho furniture
men are affected more by the raises
than any other lino of business, but
as thoy already have terminal rates In
many things tho railroad men say
they aro still allowed all of the 100
miles of territory agreed upon at tho
Chicago conference.
Tho now tariff first gave a rate on
mixed carloads of furniture, with 12,
000 pounds minimum, of $2.20 from all
eastern points. Tho proof received
yesterday has raised that $2.75 from
Atlantic coast points, $2.60 from Chi
cago and $2.20 from St. Paul.
Tho rate o desks and bookcases of
$1.75 from Now York and $1.00 from
Chicago and St. Paul Is taken out en
tirely. Tho rate on kindergarten seats and
tables was fixed at $1.30 from Now
Nork and Chicago and $1.20 from St.
Paul. That rate Is removed and those
articles are classed with school seats
which have tho rate of $1.30 from New
York removed. Tho rato from Chica
go Is raised to $1.05. The rate from
St. Paul Is raised from $1.20 to $1.45.
A Hat rate of $1.10 was first assign
ed to mattresses and iron frames, but
that is changed to $1.95 from Now
York, $1.79 from Chicago and $1.C3
from St. Paul.
Raises Table Rates.
Tho rato on unfinished tables of
$1.50 from New York and $1.20 from
St. Paul Is cut out and the rato on ta
bles and table supplies made from
common woods from Chicago Is raised
from $1.35 to $1.73. Tho rate from
St. Paul Is raised from $1.20 to $1.53.
Tho flat rate of $1.85 on fuso cloth
in bales in canceled.
Tho rate of pig Iron is canceled. It
was fixed nt 75 cents from Now York
and 50 cents from Chicago and St.
Paul.
The rato on wooden mantels ship
ped at the -owner's risk of breakage
and chafing, is changed from tho flat
rate of $1.50 to $2.36 from New York
and Chicago, and $2.20 from St. Paul.
The car is allowed to contain not to
exceed one grate for each mantel.
The rate on Iron and slate mantels
was $1.10 from nil eastern points. It
Is raised-to $1.95 from Now York,
$1.70 from Chicago and $1.45 from St.
Paul.
Tho rate on wagons was named nt
$1.00 from Now York and Chicago and
$1.45 from St. Paul. Tho whole rate
is canceled according to tho now
sheets.
Windmills and their component
parts were given a flat rate of $1.25.
That is changed to $1,75 from Now'
York, $1.05 from Chicago and $1.45
from St. Paul.
A flat rato of $1.24 on sulphate of
zinc Is raised to $1.31.

sembled here for the annual meeting
of tho Georgia Bar Association, tho
sessions of which were begun today
and will continue until tho end of tho
week. Tho program of papers and
addresses Is one of tho best over pre
pared for a meeting of tho association.
Tho presidential address of Pctor W.
Mcldrlm of Savannah, and an address
by Judge J. H. Lumpkin of Atlanta,
will bo two leading features of the
meeting.
The discussions will include among
other subjects the restriction of tho
elective franchise, the bill to establish
a court of appeals, and the Torrens
system of registration of land titles.

FRUIT AT ST. LOUI8 FAIR.
Cooked Fruit Served to the Multitude
of Visitors, as an Advertisement of
Oregon Twenty-five Crates of
Cherries Given Away to Visitors to
the Oregon Building on Day of Ded
ication. St. Louis, Juno 30,-Daliy demon
strations of Oregon prunes are now (
being held in tho Agricultural raiaco
of the Louisiana Purchaso Exposition,
with the results that the fruit is be
coming very well known to fair visit
ors. The prunes used aro tho regular va
riety grown In tho Willamette valley,
and aro kept on hand in large sup
plies, as many pounds aro used each
day.
Tho demonstrations havo been un
der tho direction of Charles V. Gallo
way, of Yamhill county, who thor
oughly understands the horticultural
conditions of tho state. Mr. Galloway
has been appointed superintendent of
horticulture by tho Oregon state com
mission and now has a first-class dis
play at St. Inils.
This method of advertising Oregon
fruit Is considered a good one, nnd
already Oregon prunes are well known
nround tho fair. Tho first day thoy
were given out, It look over five gal
lons nn hour of tho stowed fruit to
satisfy tho peoplo who wanted a
sample. About 10 gallons are now
used overy day, and there are always
plenty of peoplo on hand to oat
them.
Twonty-ilvo crates of cherries given
away on dedication day also showed
visitors whnt sort of fruit is to bo
had in Oregon, and many were the
words of pralso heard from overy atdo
on the generosity of tho state in feed
ing tho multitude.
Later on the commission will en
deavor to keep plenty of Oregon ap
ples and pears on hand for distribu
tion. Other Oregon fruit will bo given
out In season, so that visitors win
know what to expect In Oregon In
1905.
