Novel Testimony In n Seattle Family
Row and Divorce Case.
Seattle. Juno 2. P. 11. Nolson, tho
preacher who claims tho Lord spoko
to li i in In n dream and commanded
him to desert ills lawful wife unit lieu
from the city with (ho wife of Barney
Smith, Is being tried In the superior
court today on a chargu of adultery.
Nelson hastened to obey what he
thought to lie a dlvlno Instruction,
and thereby came Into con 1 1 let with
tho law.
N'elson'H arrest wns tho result of
sensational ovldenco given against
him in t ho divorce suit instituted by
his iong-suITering and industrious
wife. At that tlmo Nelson had obeyed
the orders given him In his dream re
garding the deserting of his wlfo and
tho taking unto htmsulf or Mrs,
Smith, but had neglected to lice, as
per Instructions.
When he beard that ft warrant was
out Tor ills arrest, however, ho
promptly tied to Tacoma, where he
was arrested by Deputy Sheriff- Jack
Williams.
Nelson's defense Is probably the
most novel ever advanced In a King
county court. Ho doos not husltulo
to admit bis guilt, but claims ho U
only obeying tho Lord's will and Is
a martyr to ills religion.
Nolson has been holding services
on the streetH or Seattlo for more
than n year, assisted by Mrs. Smith.
He claims that ono ruason why tho
Uinl wanted him to leave his wlfo
wiih because alio would not usslst lil'ii
In his work, mill that sho used to
scold him because he said such long
graco beforo breakfast (but I lie meal
would get cold.
Mrs. l'nlluo Smith, Nelson's alleged
spiritual wife, entertains Hie same re
ligious heller as does the preachor.
She has left Barney Smith, who wus
a devoted husband, and six small
children, to link her fortune! with Net
son's, and has recently become I ho
mother of u seventh child, of which
Nelson Ih tho father. i
