CATTLE COMING UP

Farming Communities of the East

PAGE SIX.
It now looks as If tho bottom has
been reached In cattlo values nnd
that prices, which havo already begun
to strengthen perceptibly, will con
tlnuo In tho upward tendency for
Borne tlmo lo come, writes Solomon
Sagebrush In the Sioux Stock Jour
nal. It took a couplo of years after tho
slide began before tho bottom was
reached and as prices generally go
down considerably faster than thoy
go up, wo must not look for any moro
than a steady, healthy strengthening
of values, and looking nt tho matter
In tho light of good reason, wo havo
good grounds for predicting this.
As a natural consequence, tho con
gestion in the markets has been al
most entirely relieved and overythlug
sent to market within tho last two
weeks has found a ready outlet nt
Jalr prices. Tho top prlco of tho year
for beef cattlo has been raised twice
within that time on tho Chicago mar
ket. The farming section is now calling
for tho very class of ctatle which thoy
have been nearly giving away to get
rid of for tho past two years, which
Is ovidenco enough to prove that the
lido has turned.
During the period of high prices,
especially high on stockors, for a fuw
years preceding tho big slump, the
farmers could well afford to breed
cattle and overy calf was saved, un
til the shortage which raised tho
prices In tho first place was more
than made up.
As soon as the demand for stock
and feeding cattlo was filled, values
fell until it was a losing proposition
to raise cattlo on high priced land.
Tho farmers then decided to get what
. they could out of their young cattle
and not get stuck any further.
Their idea was to let tho people of
tho West and South ralso llio cattlo
and they would fit them for tho mar-.
let. j
3t was this action on tho part of tho
farmers and stockmen that forced
prices down until cattle were' a drug
cm tho market. For tho past two
years breeding has not been stimu
lated anywhere but on the ranges,
and oven thero thousands of head of
lielfers have been spayed and all dry
cows and heifers turned Into beef. I
But a little study of livestock sta
tistics shows that tho entire produc
tion of tho ranges does not havo much
weight when compared with tho total
output of cattlo in tho United States.
Tho ranges have a better show In
raising cattle, however, than tho
tnrmlng section, where the cost can
not be reduced to suit the prices. All
the ranchmen who owned their cattle
clear havo been able' to make a profit,
though small, during tho depressions,
aiu ?ar, hold their cattlo. when neces- I
sary, until they can sell to advantage,
without It costing ttieni moro than
tho cattle are worth,.
Those who have raised their own
cattle have not felt the depression
very much, but the men who got hurt
aro those who. bought young cattlo at
fancy prices. Thero hi too much of
an element of spallation In this to
make It a safe proposition, It may
prove a good Investment on may
not, but tho progressive ranchman can
raise his own stock and know ho has
a sure sourco of income.
When tho farming states begin to
depend on the rango country to do
tho broedlng, that means higher
prices all around.
