GUEST WAS DEAF AND DUMB.
Night Clerk at Hotel St. George Had
an Exciting Experience This Morn
ing. Fay McClung, night clerk at Hotel
St. George, got a passenger up for
tho early morning east-bound train
under difficulties.
O. II. Fay, a deaf and dumb young
man, arrived last night from Spokane
and left n cull for the 4:45 train for
the east, saying that ho would leave
his door open and the clerk could
step in und shake him, as It was im
possible for him to hear a call.
Instead of leaving his door open,
the guest locked it, and left the key
in the lock, so it waB Impossible to
use the pass key to got into tho room.
McClung was not to be defeated in
his purpose t6 get tho guest away
on his train, so he opened the tran
som had peeped In. The deaf man
was lying asleep, unmindful of the
frantic efforts of the clerk to arouse
him. McClung could not get through
tho transom, the broomstick was too
short to reach tho bed, and he was
about to give up in despair when a
bright thought struck him. He wont
to the Itltcheu and lllled his pockets
with potatoes and slipped up stairs
In triumph.
Now McClung is not a pitcher,
short stop, Influlder nor captain of
a baseball team, and a)l Ills throws
were wild at first. The transom was
small and taking aim through a
small opening, was demoralizing to
his marksmanship.
One, two, three, four potatoes
ralued down on the bed, without of

and as McClung finished tolling him

and the guest caught It by a bore
