Considerable effective and much
needed repairing has been done on
tho streets of iate, particularly In
the wuy of putting In new crossings
Crossings have been put in at the fol
lowing places: Two at tho intersee'
tion of Webb and Alta, one at Cosblo
and Alta, one at Aura nnd Alta, one
at Willow and Alta, one at Calvin and
Alta, one at Main and Water, and
two at Main and Court. Very soon
two will ho put In at Thompson and
Alta, and two at College and Alta
The average cost of these crossings,
Including labor and material, is $8.25
at points not on Main street: on
Main street the average cost Is some
what more.
Commissioner Brown urges all prop
erty owners to get a hustle on them

Many Men From Capital City Elected
to Positions of Trust.
Tho stato conventions of various of
the fraternal and secret orders of Or
egon have taken place recently, and
a number of people known locally to
the readers of this paper have receiv

Mr. I). Webster of this cltv was
elected n member of the council of
administration of tho Grand Army of

was named as one of tho delegates
trom Oregon to the national encamp'
ment. which will take place at Bos
ton. .Mass., In August. AIlss Lizzie
Smith and Miss Helen Southwick of
this city were elected members of the
executive board of the Woman's Be
lief Corps at the encampment at Hood
Hiver.
At the Masonic grand logo which
met in Portland, Dr. W. T. William
son, a former Salem resident, was
elected senior grand warden, and Lot
L. Pearco of Salem, junior grand
warden. Lot I.. Pearco was also elect
ed grand king. L. Stelwer of Salem,
grand captain of tho host; Judgo Geo.
H. Burnett of Salem, grand lecturer
of the Boyal Arch Masons.
At the grand lodge of the I. O. O. F.
at Astoria recently, Salem fared re
markably well, Grand Master Mills
being from Salem; Deputy Grand
Master Hudson coming from Stayton,
and while Grand Warden Carter Is
not n Salem man, his family relatives
cause him to stand well with Salem
people.
Rush to the Bitter Roots.
A packer who accompanied Lafo
Williams of this city to tho latter's
black lead property In tho Bitter Hoot
mountains, reached Oroflno yesterday.
He made the trip out by way of Mis
soula from which ixilnt ho took the
train to Oroflno. The packer reports
Hint the trip was a rough ono as from
four to 10 feet of snow was encoun
tered In places. Mr. Williams and
party left Oroflno about three weeks
ago and they were tho first to enter
tho Black Lead district this year.
Tho packer left Mr. Williams comfor
tably located at his property and ho
will spend the summer there In devel
opment work. Tho packer states that
the snow Is rapidly disappearing and
that the Plerco trail Into the district
Is a good one. Ho also reports that
many people are planning to enter tho
district, and the Interest already
shown assures a big rush from the
