It corrects inability to hold urine and
scalding pain in passing it, and over
comes that unpleasant necessity of being

EIGHT! MILLIONS
ENORMOUS POPULATION 18
LEAPING UPWARD.
United States Has Third Largest
Number of People Among the Na
tlons Russia and China Alone Ex
ceed Our Record Americans Live
Higher and Think More Than Any
Other People The Unit of Popula
tion Is What Counts.
Tho census bureau at Washington
estimates tho population of the Unit-'
ed States at 80,000,000.
Looked at from one point of view,
that of the earth's population, tho
figures do not appear large. Eighty
million is about G per cent of tho pop
ulation of tho globe. Compared with
tho population of other countries,
howover, the magnitude appears. Tho
United States has n larger population
than any other nation save two, Rus
sia and China. China's people aro
estimated at 400,000,000. Russia has
130,000.000.
The Units of Population.
It Is tho unit of population that
counts. Vast aggregations of people
may mean nothing but figures. Com
pare the individual American, man to
man, with the individual of any other
country. Because of his higher ca
pacity and by the use of tho appli
ances which he has Invented, tho
American can do as much In a day as
a dozen Chinamen or a half-dozen
Russians.
When the standards of living aro
compared tho difference is fully as
great. Tho American worklugman
enjoys luxuries such as the Russian
peasant and tho Chineso coollo never
dreamed of. Tho comparison of In
telligence is no less striking. Tho
mass of Illiterates in Europe has no
complement in this country. Our av
erage of intelligence! Is tho highest
the world has reached.
We Are the Wealthiest.
Tho United States is and has been
In recent years the wealthiest coun
try In the world. Wo own 26 per cent
of tho wealth of the globe. We have
six million farms worth over twenty-
two billions of dollars. Wo have
more than half a million factories em
ploying a million and a half workers
to whom is paid three billions of dol
lars In wages and whoso product
amounts to fourteen billions of dollars
annually. We are first In tho produc
tion of livestock, farm products, sli
ver, steel, copper, cotton and other
things. Our per capita of wealth Is
$1300. Our public debt, compared
with the countries of Europe, is a
bagatelle, being only 32 cents per
capita.
A Tremendous Growth.
The United States Is growing In
every direction more rapidly than any
other nation. We have been doubling
our population about overy 33 years.
in 40 years tho per capita of wealth
has increased from $525 to $1300. The
value of our farm and manufactured
products has more than doubled in
that time.
In a large sense we have captured
the markets of tho world. Wo build
bridges In India and ship locomotives
overywhero. The children of Africa's
coral strand play with our empty beef
cans. Camels nre hitched to Ameri
can plows. American bicycles pass I
the pyramids overy day. Tho music I
uf tho American sowing niaciiino is
heard In the huts on the steppes of
Slberln. In Europo they rail us "Tin.'
American Danger."
A Humane People.
Wo aro the most humane people
now living. Wo spend more money
for education than any other country
And more also In philanthropy. Wo
care for and educate the Individual
citizen as no other nation docs. We
think more of, and for, the common
man than any other people do. We
are touched by a sense of Injustice
quicker and respond more heartily
limn miy uinur. we listen muru m
tentlvely to the story of suffering am!
give moro generously than any other
Wo have advanced tho doctrine of the
brotherhood of man farther than any
other people.

GRAPES AT LEWISTON.
Food Commlsisoner of Idaho Tells of
Increasing Culture.
Food Commissioner Mcl'horson of
Idaho, In speaking of grape culturo at
Lewlston, recently said:
"If tho Lewlston country had
grapes on exhibition at the Ogden ex
position last year, where 17 of the
western states were represented.
Lewlston would have taken the first
prize without a close second. Tho
showing made by tho growers here
Is remarkable and within n few years
It Is assured thnt largo acreages will
be dovotcd to tho growing of table
and wine grapes.
"Tho growers hero are now making
from $800 to $1200 profit per acre
each year, and there Is no danger of
the market over being exhausted.
"Tho importation of torelgn wines
Into tho United States Is startling
and when it Is known that moro than
CG per cent of these wines are adul
terated and unfit for use tho demand
for home products Is Increased.
"Prospective grape growers should
exerciso great caution In selecting
their cuttings free from pests and
tho safest nlan is to securo stock
from sections freo from pests and
afterwards fumigate the plant before
setting out.
"The most dangerous pest to tho
grape industry Is known as the "phy
loxora,' a root louse, which is sure
death to the plant'
