JOHNSON RECALLS EF FICIENT PUBLIC SERVICE No Costly Extra Sessions of the Leg Islature Through Democratic Mem bers' Fault County Administration Has Been Economical and Able Un der Democrats. Falrvlow Farm, June 2. (To tho East Oregonlan.) I noticed nn article In today's Issue of tho Pendleton Trlb une. written by some good republican at Echo, In regard to a part of my recent letter published in the East Oregonlan. Now this writer, whoever he be, ac I etises nie of being "childish In the e.' ; trome," becnuse I said In my nrtlcle i that the democrats bb public servants ' both In the county and the legislature "did not ruin tho country," and he would make people bellove that the reason they did not ruin tho country was not because of their honesty or ability at all, but was duo to the fact that the republican party had the ma Jorlty In the legislature, etc. Now, of course, It is true that the republicans had a large majority In the legislature, but It Is also true that I stated in my letter to tho E. O., that Instead of the democrats ruining the country as claimed by the ropub Ilcans, they (the democrats) have have proved to be the savior of the country, and to prove my assertion I pointed out very clearly the fact that all the democratic office holders In the county during the past term have voluntarily saved some $5,000 or $G 000 to tho taxpayers of the county. Then again. I said that Governor Chamberlain wns not compelled to call nn expensive extra session tu order to correct nny mistakes- made In the bills or laws presented by nny of the democrats either Pierce, Smith or Blakeloy, etc. but how can this Echo writer say the same thing about the republicans? What about Mr. Phelps with his now tax law? How much monoy did his blunders cost the taxpayers of Oregon7 The proof of the pudding is in the eating of It. I still maintain that the democratic administration In Umatilla county for the past several years has been, and Is the very best that this county has over had, and the taxpayers and all fair-minded people arc so well pleased and satisfied with their democratic servants, that they will re-elect overy one of them next Monday by such a large majority as will make that great (?) republican club of Echo look like the proverbial 30 cents. Yes, of course, I pointed to tho good records of tho democratic offi cials In office, and why should I not do so. God knows that It Is something worth pointing to. This Echo writer also claims that Mr. Cloveland, as president, brought ruin to the country, etc.. hut nllow me to say that Mr. Cleveland today has no standing in the democratic party, but is rather an Illegitimate prince in the republican party. All that is need ed to make him a full-fledged modern, up-to-date republican, Is only the rite of baptism. Now, in conclusion, allow me to say that all the lies sprung against Mr. Hartman will fall flat. Mr. Hart- man bus made a most honorable and excellent county Judge. The people are perfectly satisfied, and by the great horn-spoon wo will re-elect him next .Monday by such a large majori ty of votes that It will make his do tractors ashamed of themselves and admit that campaign lies can no long er bo made the means to defeat honor able, capable and trustworthy men for office It.
