Dr. Washington Matthews of Wash ington Gives Correct Pronuncia tion. Portland, June 2.- (To tho Editor.) Kindly Inform me what Is the cor rect way to pronounce tho name of Sacajawea. Reader. Correct spelling, Tsakakawea; cor rect pronunciation, Tsa-ka-ha-wea, with accent on second syllable. In correct spelling used by Lewis and Clark. Sacajawea, with accent on the lats syllable. In the March Issue of the Lewis and Clark Journal Is an Item concerning Dr. Washington Matthews, ot tho United States bureau of ethnology: "Dr. Washington Matthows, the well known ethnologist of Washing ton, D. C, etc., etc., Is tho highest living authority on the Indian tribe (Mlnnctarees). into which tho Bird woman was adopted when a child. Ho lived among these Indians eight years, and compiled a grammar and dictionary of their language, the HI- datsa. The spelling 'Sacajawea, which Dr. Matthews condemns, is that of Lewis and Clark. This Indian nume of 'Bird woman' cnino to them through the Canadian- French of Charbonneau, her husband, and tho error has been so widely adopted that it would now be Impos sible to correct the spelling and pro nunciation without causing endless cdnfuslon in tho popular mind con cerning the Identity of the 'Bird wo man.
