ANOTHER FALSEHOOD NAILED,
Referring to the libelous attack in
tho Tribune this morning on tho edl
torial page, referring to Judge Hart
man, the facts are these: Judge
Hartman sustained Strain's assess
ment of the shares ot capital stock of
tho First Notional Bank of Pendle
ton.
Among the largest stockholders in
the First National Bank of Pendleton
Is Mrs. Llna Sturgls, a sister of
George A. Hartman and widow of
Sam P. Sturgls, lato cashier of the
First National Bank. Another sub
stantlal stockholder In tho First Na
tional Bank is W. S. Byers.
At tho advlco and Instance of Judge
Hartman, neither Airs. Sturgls nor
Mr. Byers joined In the suit to enjoin
the enforcement of the assessment,
and both paid tho taxes levied against
their capital stock In the First Na
tional Bank without reference to the
:sult and before tho case was decided.
Neither joined In tho nult. The taxes
on these shares of stock were paid
or Mrs. Sturgls by George A. Hart
man himself, who Is her agent.
Further reference is had to the tes
timony of George A. Hartman in this
auit, the suit being decided in favor
of the county upon the testimony of
G. A. Hartman and C. P. Strain.
If other taxes assessed against
shareholders In tho First National
Bank of Pendleton have not been
.paid, it is no fault of Hartraan's nor
ot the county court, since tho collec
tion of dollnquent taxes takes a regu
lar course and there Is no provision
.-at law whereby the taxes of one per
son can be collected In any different
.manner than the taxes of another.
If the stockholders do not pay their
taxes, their taxes are delinquent and
will he collected in course of law the
same as other taxes. ,
IS LABOR DEGRADING?
If Professor R. C. French, of Wes
ton Normal, said that "nobody but a
hobo works In a brickyard," as ho Is
reported to have said, the young man
who pelted hlra with stale eggs for
ithe slur, deserves the sympathy of
the community.
This sort of would-bo aristocratic
doctriuo expressed by French's state
mont is not tho right kind for a farm
ing community, llko Eastern Oregon,
whoro half of tho school population
comes from tho farm or the manual
trades.
One-half of tho high school gradu
ates from Pendleton this week, are
the sons and daughters of farmers,
ivho labor zealously and profitably,
and arc not disgraced, hut rather, aro
ennobled by it. The cheap white shirt
aristocracy which despises tho work
ingman, and frowns down tho Hard
handed lahoror, Is not tho kind that
should predominate In Eastern Ore
gon schools. Tho stato should inves
tigate the remarks of Professor
French, and If thoy aro true, as re

Under this action, .Marconi must re
move nil his stations along tho At
lantic, by which he was hoping to es
tablish regular communication with
England to Canadian soil. Tho navy
department wllll establish Us own
plant on the Nantucket light, where
tho Marconi stations have been order
ed discontinued.
Seven other stations will be main
tained along tho Atlantic coast, and
will operate with all established wire
less systems. All information con
cerning Incoming and outgoing ves
sels will be furnished free to the
press associations.
Messages to and from persons on
shipboard will not bo charged for by
the government, only tho land tolls
being collected. All the wireless sta
tions will communicate with each
other, and co-operate with the rev
enue cutter and life-saving service by
reporting wrecks nnd suspected
smugglers.
The decision of the cabinet com
mittee was based on the fact that un
less the government controlled tho
wireless stations, ,no secret message
could ho received from or transmitted
to warships. It is expected that pro
tracted litigation will follow the us
sumption of control by tho govern'
mont, but tho vital and far-reaching
results of this emphatic Indorsement
of the underlying principles of social-
Ism, will be worth all the effort made
to accomplish It.
From this achievement another
top will bo much easier. Within
Ave years. It Is safo to say that tel
egraph and telephone tolls will bo re
duced by 50 per cent, through the
operation of public ownership.
It Is the utmost folly for tho peoplo
to pay out to private individuals and
syndicates tho earnings that should
go Into better homes, more education
and more comforts when tho govern
ment can save the peoplo this unjust
taxation by taking control of these
great utilities.
