Our work Is never slighted or botched. Pendleton Planing Mill and Lumber Yard ROBERT FORSTER, Proprietor. Corner Webb awl College. Washington, D. C, May 27 Though they decline to discuss the matter publicly, It Is known that the Catholic church leaders In Washington nnd elsewhere throughout tho country nro Indulging In much speculation Just now as to the real purpose of Cardinal Satolli's visit to the Inlted Stales. His eminence Is scheduled to sail from Naples today nnd It Is under stood thnt upon his arrival In New York hi will proceed direct to this city. Several stories are current as to the object of the cardinal's visit, but nil of these are palpably more In the nature of excuses than reasons. It Is not believed In well-informed cir cles that ho is coming solely to visit the St. Louis exposition, nor Is It re garded as likely ihat the purimso of his trip Is to officiate at the Malonoy wedding, as announced In n recent Philadelphia dispatch.. More reasonable is the story thnt appeared In n recent Issuo of the Fi garo of Paris, which declared thnt the real purpose of Sntolll's visit wna to institute nn inquiry Into tho pres ent condition of Roman Catholicism In the United States and to Investi gate serious illfflrtiltlpR said to havo arisen between tho Apostolic Delegnto Falconlo nnd n majority of tho Ameri can bishops. "The Amcrlcnn episcopate," ac cording to tho writer In tho Figaro, "is resolved to enjoy certain liberty and finds It difficult to submit to the absolutism of Rome, which would Im pose regulations entirely at variance with American customs. The turn things are taking nrouscs a certain amount of anxiety at tho Vatican, where a recrudescence of American ism Is apprehended." Chief among the regulations re ferred to and regarded as entirely at varlanco with American customs is the papal letter Issued about a year ago calling for tho re-establishment of the Gregorian chant in all of tho Ro man Catholic churches and tho cllml nation of women singers from tho choirs. Subsequent to tho Issulne of this order a meeting of tho archbish ops of tho country was held In this city to consider the matter. At tho close of tho session Archbishop Mess mer of Milwaukee, was quoted as having said Ihat thero would be no changes in the music of the American Catholic churches for tho present, for It was the opinion of all of tho archbishops thnt under tho present circumstances it would bo practically impossinic to enforce tho decree. Cardinal Gibbons was asked to write to the Vatican of the facts which led to this decision, nnd to ask for advlco and a modification of the decree, which would mako Its enforce ment possible. The nrchblshops then decided to do nothing moro In tho matter until n reply should he receiv ed from Rome. At the same tlmo there appears to be some dissension among the American bishops, nil of them not holding out for tho decision of tho Washington conference hut, on tne other hand, appearlnc to favor the literal enforcement of llio decree from Rome. Thus, within tho last few weeks. Bishop Kelley of Savannnh, han eliminated women from the choirs of his diocese, und a tentative stop In mo same Direction lias Peon mndo by Archbishop Farley In retard to the choir of St. Patrick's cathedral In New "York city.
