Tho total Increase In tho number of sheep In Umatilla county with this j year's crop of Inmbs, will amount to J 85 per cent of the old stock, which j makes about 250,000 head of sheep j owned In the county. The ranges wore overstocked last year, and very few sheep were ship- pert nuL. so the old crop is principally j all on hand with an additional sur-i plus of 85 per cent to bo kept on tho same range area. Now that the woo is sold, the next question for the sheopman is tho dis posal of surplus sheep, In order to keep tho business going nnd to find sutllclent range on which to keep a reasonable number. There is no disguising the fact, ac cording to a pioneer sheepman of tliis county, t hat young sheep are go ing to sell cheap In this county this year. The range Is slninly all occu pied and the overcrowded condition must be relieved by sales. The con ditions in thf Kastern and Central states, where feeders are In demand, will not Justify more thnn $1.55 per head for veariings here, nnd this uneras to l'p the ruling price now. with few takers even at that flcum. Yesterday 9000 head of yearling wethers were offered for $1.55 per head, but were not sold. This condition Is not peculiar to Umatilla county, bill nil Kastern Ore gon experiences the same condition. Very few sheep were shipped out last year. CJiowcrs held for better prices, shipments drugged along and winter came on before anv movement find been made. Then tho same old sur plus was hold over In hopes that some thing would happen this spring nnd now tho added S5 per cent of tho now crop, has not improved tho sltuntlon. nnd something must bo done this sen son or tho hnv crop of Eastern Ore gon will not lie sufficient to sustain the number of sheep now owned and pastured in this district. The Incomo from the wool crop this year will be below tho average, despite the clean, thrifty, vigorous texture of the crop. Tho sheep are cleaner and the lleeces wolgh less than usual, while the better prices do not equal!.!1 tlio loss In I lie weight of the fleece. Many of the clips sold here Monday did not nverage over SO cenlh per head, while very few clips averaged $1.10 to $1.15. Tim running expenses, such as shearing, taxes, salt, Interest on tlio investment, and all tho ordinary ex penses of running a herd of sheep wore tiie snme as If the dip had been dlrtipr nnd heavier, while the profit Is appreciably less. All these facts are taken into con sideration by the sheepman, nnd al though the wool prices liavi- been ex ceptionally high, and the sales very satisfactory, yet something must be done to meet the running expenses of l lie business and keep the herds down within ttie range area and the liny production of the comity. The expenses go on continually, while tiie herds are held and very little Incomo except from the wool sale Is realized. Rvory liimb which lives and goes to tho mountain ranges with Its mother on tho first of June stands the owner the sum of 311 cents as actual cost, of productl'ui The year's expenses added to tills price, brings the cost of tho yearling tin lo UMiut $1.50 to $1.70 per head With the market as It Is now, there Is hut little profit In tho large herd. In the overcrowded runge districts, and the tendency must lie toward smaller herds and quicker sales MARYLAND DEMOCRATS. The Mary land delegation to the democratic na tional convention will go to St. Jxiuls unlustructed. This appeared to be fi nally decided UKin at the opening of the state convention hero today. A unique plan will bo adopted In order to help nlotig tho so-called oorman boom and nt the same time leave the Maryland sonator free to control the delegation and swing its votes to whomsoever he pleases. It Is said to be the plan to formally invito Sonator Oorman to make own selection for delegales-at-la In anv event ho would probably die- lute their selection, but tho Idea is that the state convention shall, by resolution, publicly place tho appoint' meat of tho delegates in Senator Oor man's handB. Ever since tho senator returned from his rocent visit to New York he has let It bo known that ho did not want tho Maryland delegation instructed In favor of him or anyono else. The plan outlined will probably be carried out In order to show the confidence of tho convention In Mr. Oorman and to proclaim to tho coun try that tho Maryland delegation was in thorough accord with him and sub ject to his wishes. It would be tho equivalent of an endorsement without placing Mr. normon on record as a candidate. Made Young Again.
