W.y78eaUlerWMh.C.II Yutiiilna bay Is to become famed ns n praducor of now oysterH. A carload of Eastern bivalves has just been planted there. H. G. VanDuseii, state Ash warden, has returned from the oyster beds and tells about It. "A now Industry haB been started In Oregon," sold he. "Thero Is every reason to believe that Yaqulua will soon become famous lor Its new pro duct as Is Toko Point. And Yaqul na's success with undoubtedly bring Coos bay and other Oregon bays Into tho same Industry." That tho Eastern denizens will thrive In their now home Is evidenced by tho sturdy growth of specimens transplanted from the Atlantic sea board In November, 1890, when H. D. McUutre was (lsh warden. Tho oysters then Introduced In Oregon witters, 25 barrels, have been growing ever since, but do not propagate. When planted nearly eight years ago they were about the size of a dollar. Since then they have expanded to prodtgous size. The specimens brought back by Mr. VunDusen yesterday were about flvo Inches long by throe Inches wide. Tho oysters spawn sure enough; but the spat succumbs to adverse con ditions of Its new habitat commonly supposed to bo coldness ot tho water. At any rate, Yaqulna Day. like wuia pa or Shoalwator Day, Is not adapted to propagation of the Eastern oyster.- though the Imported bivalve Itself seems to rejoice In tho now homo. Consenuently it will be necessary constantly to plant the Yaqulna beds with Eastern "seed," as is uone at Toke Point. Many carloads of seed are brought over tho continent from the Atlantic sldo to Toke Point every year and an extensive Industry has grown from meager beginnings. The oysters planted at Yaquina in 189G attained their full growth four years ago, since thon the shell has simply thickened and grown heavy. Though the month of May does not contain tho letter "II" In Its spelling, the specimens exhibited by Mr. van Dtison were In excellent condition for tho epicure. The oysters have been undor tho supervision of tho state bi ologist for oxperimont purposes and under tho Immediate care ot George King, of Wlnant. A Cure for Piles.
