Alii ANCIENT RELIC
SUMPTER PROSPECTOR
MAKES UNUSUAL FIND.
An Ancient Tombstone With Almost
Obliterated Inscription Thought to
Mark the Last Resting Place of a
Compeer of Lewis and Clark Will
Be Called to the Attention of the
Exposition Authorities Of Great
Value, if Authentic.
Admiration of Ladies i
James Erlcxson, a prospector who
has been working in the mountains
In the vicinity of Sumpter for some
time past, was In town yesterday
looking for someone who could direct
him to the attention of the mauagerx
of the Iewls and Clark fair. Ho call
ed upon Judge G. A. Hartnian, who
gave hi in the addresses of the men
managing the exhibits and Mr. Erlcx
son left to make himself known to
them.
Mr. Erlcxson has found a relic and
it may be of value just at this time,
for the reason that It has, so he
thinks, a connection with the Lewis
and Clark expedition.
While clambering through the
hills In the vicinity of Sumpter look
ing for gold signs, the prospector
came upon a little valley or cup be
tween two knolls. In digging about
for "signs," hu humped Into a large,
evenly hewn rock upon which were
some almost-erased letters auu fig
ures. His curiosity being aroused he
dug the slab out or the dirt covering
It, and cleaned the debris off the In
scription, From what he read of tho lettering
the slab had been a gravestone, and
the fact that It seemed to have been
at one time the top of a pile of rockB,
lends credence to the opinion.
Mr. Erlcxson says the word "Clark"
can be faintly traced on tho face of
the slab, cut In what have ut one time
been rugged letters, while some dis
tance above Is a fragment of the let
ter "U" and a part of a date.
It Is supposed by Mr. Erlcxson that
the slab was erected to mark the
place of burial of ono of the 1iwls
and Clark party. He will bring the
matter to the attention of the com
mission and place his monument on
exhibition at the fair.
