Fourteen Hundred Representatives of Many Million Communicants May Consolidate With Cumberland Pres byterians Race Question Is Again to the Front Scheme to Raise $20, 000,000 for Endowment of Colleges. Buffalo, N. Y., May 19. The Lafa yette Avenue Presbyterian church, spacious though It Is, was scarcely able to accommodate the crowds who Bought admittance this morning at the opening of the HCth annual session of tne iTesbytcrlnn general assembly. The gathering was called to order at 11 o'clock by the retiring moderator. the Rev. Robert F. Coyle, D. D of Denver. Two hours previous to the formal opening the chapel was thrown open to receive tho credentials of the commissioners, numbering nearly 700, and an equal number of alternates, nnd from that hour until the assemblr convened tho Rev. Dr wminm n .Roberts, the stated clerk, was kept busy distributing "badges and assign ing the delegates to their places. Tho session begun today will con tinue for 10 days or longer. As con stituting the highest court in the church, the assembly will be a matter see. POPULAR OCEAN BEACH. Many From the Interior Planning to Spend Their Vacation at the Sea Shore. Hundreds from Eastern nrnrrnn nnil Washington, snont tholr vnmt Inn nt North (Long) Reach, Washington, last summer, nnd It Is safe to say that this popular resort of tho North Pacific coast will bo visited by many more this year than evor within Hr nintnrv. The chango from a high and dry In terior altitudo to tho sea level is most beneficial. The trip on tho Wlllamnttn nnd f!n. lumbla rivers out of Portland, Is one long to be remcmbored, the usual heat of a summer afternoon being tempered by a gentle breeze freighted with the aroma of pine trees and seasoned with tne salt sea air. The scenery includes much that Is beautiful. Leaving Port; land on one of tho Oregon Railroad & Navigation Company's palatial river steamers, (tho T. J. Potter being queen oi river llyors) the excursion ists are carried through its harbor, where fly the flags of many nations. The 12 miles on tho Willamette river are quickly made, and, after sa luting the government lighthouse, marking the Junction of the two rivers, the boat swings into the Columbia for the trip down stream. The morning Is clear (generally so from June until September), and a. magnificent and Inspiring sight meets the eye as the sweep around the bend Is made Ave snow-ennned neaks. .Mount Hood. .Mount Adams. There are no heresy trials, nnd no re vision of the confession of faith is ex pected, hm Y,b many questions of doc trine nnd discipline which are con stantly coming up in all sections of the country, and which have been brought to the assembly for adjudica tion, will Inject plenty of doctrinal dls cusBlon into the sessions. Foremost among the question to re ceive attention Is the proposed con solidation of the Presbyterian and Cumberland Presbyterian churches. Doctrinal differences have separated these churches for years past, but or late they have been drawing closer together and now there Bemes to be little difficulty In the way of bringing about a consolidation. A Joint com mittee has arranged a plan of consoli dation, which must now be ratified by the two denominations. It Is expect ed that this will be done, though there will be opposition to the step, both nt the assembly here, and at the assem bly of the Cumberland Presbyterians, which meets today at Dallas. Another question of far-reaching Im portance touches the color line in the Presbyterian church. For some years past overtures have come to the gen eral assembly, asking the privilege of establishing separate presbyteries for white and colored ministers In the same territory. Such a proposition has always been defeated and it is ex pected the committee In. charge of the question, and which hns been deliber ating on It for the past year, will again report against it. Another Important committee which I Is to report at tne present session is that which is known as the $20,000.- I 000 committee on the endowment of j colleges., especially in the West. This1 I committee will Btibmlt a plan for rals : ing the needed money and this report will doubtless provoke much discussion. On down the picturesque river, past villages, sawmills, fishing fleets, sal mon canneries, perpendicular basaltic bluffs, and pretty side-hill farms, the boat pursues its way. The majestic sweep of the river Is awe Inspiring. Gradually the shores grow farther apart, and, scarcely realizing that the five hours have been consumed In mak ing tho trip, the boat steams alongside the wharf at Astoria. One hour from Astoria, through the famous fishing wnters of the Colum bia, past scores of salmon traps and nets and as many white-winged fish boats, lands the passengers at llwaco. on Baker's Bay, where connection for beach points Is made with trains of is llwaco Railway & Navigation Com pany, whose cars stand on the wharf awaiting the steamer. North Beach, where the surf bathing Is unexcelled at low tide. Is from 200 to 400 feet wide. 23 miles long and so compact that a carriage or wagon scarcely ! leaves a trace upon It. Scattered along the beach are hund reds of cottages and hotels in which Hummer life Is an unceasing round of pleasure from the opening until the closing of tho season. The much dreaded "Resort Mosquito" is un known and no venomous snakes or In Beets are found. The thermometer rarely gets above 80 degrees In July or August, but light overcoats; ares" morning ana evening nnd blankets at night are comfortable during the season. Rates for accommodations at North Beach points are reasonable nnd vary to suit the visitor. At European hotels nnd lodging houses rooms range from rents -to tl a day; at restaurants, meals run from 25 to 50 cents; and at the American plan hotels, the chargeb ranee from $1 a day to $2 and up ward. Doaens of delightful Bide trips may be taken from the beach into a coun try of wild and picturesque beauty, quiet and secluded among hills and forest, with hunting and fishing In na tlve haunts; to the United States lite saving stations and lighthouses, cranberry farmB, oyster beds, salmon fishing grounds and canneries. For particulars about the trip to North Beach, ask the nearest O. R. & N. agent, or send two cents in stamps to A. L.
