I The purchase of the La Dow block by .Mayor Matlock, is one of the heaviest realty deals ever made in this city, and recalls one of the busi est building periods of Pendleton, j C That portion of the La Dow block j P at the northeast corner of Johnson and Court streets, occupied by the 1 Owl Tea House, was built in 1885, C preceding the erection of tho remain-! der of the building by four years. In I f lOOA t . . . ... . I 1.. .11.11 was erecteu, carrying me structure clear through to Thompson street. The property thus has a frontage of 200 feet 'on Court street, and being 200 feet square, thus extends two thirds of tho distance through to Water street. The ground thus described In area was for many years the property of Oeorgc A. La Dow, and upon ...s de mise his wife and two minor heirs canio into possession. When they concluded to build upon the ground Frank E. La Dow had become of ago; his brother, Louis M. La Dow, was yet a minor. It was necessary to get a loan to raise the funds to build with. nnd tho ground described was put up as collateral. An order or court was secured giving tho author ity to mortgage, the ground, and $;10,- 00O was raised by a mortgage upon It. and the building was erected. After Louis becamn of age It lie came apparent that tho property could pot he made to pay out, and it eventually went into the hands of the mortgagors, the JarvJs-Conklin com pany. About this Juncture I.ouls brought suit to recover his unim proved original interest, claiming Ir regularities in the proceedings, which claim Included fraudulent represen tations to liimself. to secure his con sent to incumbering me ground to secure the loan spoken of. The upshot of iL was that ho main tnlned Ills position, and was award ed by tho courts nn .undivided ono- thlnl interest In tho ontiro property tho business huiiso and sovurnl res idences on the side streots which ho held until ho eventually disposed of It at ills own pleasure.
