Among the hnrdy pioneers who helped to found tho state of Oregon Umatllln county has a goodly share. Yesterday T. Benle, who has resided nt Pilot Hock for the past 24 years vlslied tills otllco nnd relnted n few pioneer experiences which enter Into the very foundation of civil govern mcnt In this state. Mr. Beale came to Oregon with the great immigration of 1S50, from Southwest Missouri. He was ono of u company In which there wore 200 wagons, and when the company reached old Fort Boise. It started duo west, through the Hnrnoy nnd .Malheur deserts, directly townrd the headwaters of the Willamette- river, They struck the Cascade runge nt Diamond Peak, and cut n road down the west slope of the mountains, to the present site of Corvallls. There hud been no wagons over the route through Central Oregon nt thnt time. The brush and timber wore so thick on the Cascades that their progress was very slow down tho little creek that formed the headwaters of the Willamette river. They know they wore near the Wil lamette valley when they came to In sight of the Three Sisters In the Cascade range, for they hnd been told In a letter from Oregon the year before, that the three peaks were sure landmarks that stood over the beautiful valley, on the west side of the range. They sighted these peaks while many days travel out in the barren Southern Oregon desert and It gave them renewed courage In the hard task of climbing the mountain on the east side and In cutting a road down the west side. Where the company started down the west side of the range, they were compelled to let tho wagons down with ropes, so steop were tho cliffs. They were six months from Bates county, Missouri, to Oregon City, ar riving nt the latter place on Novem ber 1, 1S50. Air. Beale remembers Dr. John McLoughlin, the Hudson Bay pioneer of tills state, and when the old Brit isher saw tho 300 wagons In Mr. Bealo's party drive down the beauti ful valley and begin to make camp at the old town of Oregon City, he stormed out In terrible rage, and asked the company what they were doing In British territory. Pointing eastward, be said to thorn: "There Is your American territory, east of the Rockies. Oregon is ours and reaches to the summit of the Rockies, and we will hold It! Oo back to your own country!" .Mr. Heale's party answered that they had come to Oregon to stny and that they would wade through blood up to their necks, to hold the coun try for the United States. .Mr. Beale wns born In Virginia, on the James river in 181C, and has helped settle four frontiers In his life of 88 years. When a young man he came from Virginia to Kentucky and took pnrt in the early settle ment of that state. Then he moved to Illinois, and later to .Missouri, and remembers seeing 8t. Louis for the first time in 1837, when It was no larger than Pendleton, and not half so well built from an architectural point of view, most or the buildings being small wooden structures, i He came up to Umatilla county from the Willamette valloy In 1880, and thinks this Is the best portion ot Oregon.
