section away back in the eighties and
bought thousands of head of cattle
and drove them over the trail to
Montana and other points. It was
before railroad days and the cowboy
outfits brought hero by Lang, See
right Bros, and Jesse Hasten wore

T. C. Egleston, commissioner of
Immigration, labor and statistics, has
just completed an Irrigation census
of the state. It has been made with
great caro, every canal In the state
being canvassed. Compilation of the
data shows the following facts:
Tho state has 2422 miles of main
Irrigation canals.
The cost of construction of those
canals was $5,446,180.
They cover 1,308,372 acres of land.
Of tho land covered by these ca
nals, 749,551 acres Is In cultivation.
Thoro lies tinder tho canals 618,
821 acres uncultivated and unim
proved.
In addition to canals constructed,
there are In tho state, now In course
of construction, or under contract,
projected canals that will cover
nearly 1,000,000 acres and the cost
of which when completed, will be
more than ?G,000,000. Boise Statesman.

'This week the cattle market con
tinued the strong tone of the former
week but no changes were made In
the quotations. Hogs, although not
considered very firm, showed a slight
advance of 10c, while sheep were dull
and showed every tendency of reach
ing a lower lovol. With the excep
tion of sheep, the receipts this week
were smaller than thoso of tho previ
ous period. They were:
