USES OF GOAT SKINS.
How the Fashionable Trade Is Film.
Flammed by Bogus Furs.
The writer was first attracted to
the Angora goat as being a most ex
cellent substitute for wild fur-bearing
animals so rapidly becoming extinct.
The buffalo, which has supplied tho
buggy and carriage robes for so many
centuries, has been exterminated, and
nearly all other kinds of fur are very
rare and expensive.
The demand for this class of prod-
uct has always been enormous, and a
glance at any fur dealers price list
will convince anyone that the fur In
dustry Is one of great promise. There
Is no domestic animal that can supply
this great demand of the human fam
ily better than the Angora goat, Inas
much as the Bkin can bo taken In
such a variety of stages,
For Instance, when tho hair is of
ono month's growth It can hardly bo
distinguished from the Astrachan If
dyed black: or it can be taken at an
earlier period of growth and made to
represent the polar or black bear, ac
cording to the character of the dyes.
used.
It may not be known that nearly
all the buggy robes that are now used
and sold as wild animal fur, are noth
Ing more than goat skins dyed. And
perhaps young IadleB who admire tho
so-called "real monkey skin' muffs
and cloaks will be surprised to learn
that they are only stralght-halred
goat skins dyed black.
One of the most profitable uses
that the Angora goat skin Is put to Is
in making lace trimmings, which com
mand a price per yard equivalent to
$15 for a single hide.
Another use is In making noor
rugs and coverings for tho backs of
sofas and arm chairs. Tho beautirul
luster of the curly hair Is brought out
in most effective manner by tho re
flection ot gas light, and nearly all
housekeepers who have not already
got them are anxious to possess
