SOMETHING WILL BE
DOING FROM NOW ON.
Two Hundred and mlrty.five Dogs
Eligible to Assessment, While Hun
dreds Are Liable to Execution
Only Sixty Poll Taxes Have Been
Kaia, and the Controversy Will Be
Brought to a Head Very Soon.
Tho dog tax business is picking up
slnco the people realize It Is the in
tention of the council to back tho
marshal In his efforts to enforce the
law and there now remain but 70
dogs that have not been provided
with a tag.
One hundred nnd sixty-five people
of the city have each paid Into the
city treasury $1.50 for the privilege
of having a canine pet In the family.
Besides those dogs and the 70 yet
to be taxed, there are about 3,000
that have no owners, but have drift
ed In from the sheep country and
tlfo reservation and which are sub
ject to eexcutlon on capture. After
all that are claimed have been licen
sed, It is intended that the city dog
catcher will start In on a campaign
of extermination.
So fnr about 00 poll taxes have
been paid, and Special Officer Shep
hard started out this morning with
his little book to write up the situa
tion for tho guidance of the marshal.
It will take several days to finish the
canvass, nnd then things will be do
ing for those who have not settled.
ON TWO CHARGES.
Arrested Here and Afterward on a
Complaint From Heppner.
J. W. Proctor, of Heppner, was ar
rested this morning on complaint of
Dr. J. Christie, who charged him with

some work for a farmer In this vi
cinity. Christie complained.
The prisoner stated to the court
that he hud no money to put up the
amount of bail required, and wns
about to be sent to the county jail,
when Sheriff Taylor appeared on the
scene with a requisition from Hepp
hit, where the man is wanted on a
charge of obtaining mouey under
false pretenses by cashing a check
when he had no funds behind it.
Proctor was accordingly turned
over to the sheriff, the charge of the
veterinarian being held in abeyance.
He will be taken to Heppner Junction
In the morning by Mr. Taylor, who
will turn him over to the Heppner
(ifllcluls at that point.
