i teller form Antonio Salaznr,

resslon that from his point ot view
Janlla Is no Mecca for the young
aan wanting work,
A recommendation from the United
nates, he says, has no weight with
lie business houses thure. And to
(!t a government position one must
pass a civil service examination,
which Is hard. Ho thinks It would
be bettor for him to he here carrying
newspapers or picking fruit at the
Blalock farm.
His grandmother Is the only tie
that hinds him to the Philippines.
She Is old and very feeble and he
considers It his duty to care fof her
whllo "sho lives. "Otherwise," ho
writes, ''I would come back as soon
as I could." One thing ho realizes
tho necessity of attending school
and to "continue my work In school,"

Decadence of the Range.
" In a recent bulletin published by
tho oxporlment station at the state
agricultural bureau at Pullman valu
able Information Is given concerning
tho range conditions In Easteiyt and
Central Washington. Within recent
years most"oT the former extensive
range has boon tnken up, either as
homesteads or as stock ranches, and
tho time is rapidly approaching when
cattlemen will have to own their
own ranges or else be forced out of
the business.
Already the greater part of tho
available grazing land In the Colum
bia river hasln and the eastern Cas
cade watershed has been taken up,
and tho Okanogan country Is being
forced to let greater demands be
tnado upon Its grazing lands. As yet
It is not so badly depleted as the re
gion of tho south, but tho settlement
of many homesteads each year may
soon place It on par with the other
districts. Even now In the river vni
leys, where the soil Is naturally
lighter, the bunchgrass Is disappear
inc and needle grass Is taking Its
place. Walla Walla Statesman.
