Irrigating by Electricity. Tlio Bnlter City correspondent of tlio Portland Telegram writes: W. ,1. Patterson Is breaking up 320 acres of Innd nenr this city, which ho is going to Irrigate by means of elec tricity. There Is no water available for Ir rigating this land In the ordinary wny. It Is too high up on the bench to dlvort water from tho river, and then there would he no water unap propriated In the rlvor if river wntor could ho conveyed to the land. There is nn abundance of water flowing underneath this land nt a depth of about 20 feet. Experiments mnde last season demonstrated that this source of supply was constant and abundant. The question was how to raiso the water to tho sur face In sufficient quantity to Irrigate the land, nt nu expense that would not bo prohibitive. There Is nn electric transmission line which conveys electric power to one of the mines which passes over this land. Mr. .Patterson hit upon tho Idea of sinking largo wells, nnd ho bus mnde arrangements to put In a number of these pumps. A Ave horsepower motor will raise "20 gal lons of water per minute, which Is sufficient for 80 acres of land. A largo well Is put down on the highest part of tho tract to ho Irri gated, and tlio electric motor and pump does tho rest. Mr. I'ntlcrson expects to raise a crop on the laud this season Hint will produce enough to pay for all im provements and leave a neat profit besides, Water Route to Sumpter. Democrat. Eastern Cattle Market Poor. A letter received from F. M. La cey of Minneapolis, formerly a resi dent of this city, contains the state ment that there Is no salo at all for stock cattle In the East, nnd most nil feeders during the past winter havo lost money. From other sources a similar statement has reached tho Bine Mountain Eagle, u Is accepted by many as a correct condition of the stock market In tlio East, and that this condition thero will have n more or less effect on the sale of cattle hero In Oregon. Mr. Lacey will buy 20.000 two and 3-year-old wethers this spring, this, he says, being the only class, of stock that there Is any demand for at present. Ho expects to come to this county In a short time nnd will likely buy iirasi oi ino snoop tram locnl snoop-i men. Grant County News. Lost Ewes In Mudholes. .1. 11. Long Creek Eagle. FRANKLIN COUNTY WHEAT. i Prospects In the Dry Belt Are Now Highly Encouraging. Dr. J. Marion Smith of Uis An geles, nccompanled, by his wife, spent yesterday In the city waiting for nn O. U. & N. train to go East. Dr Smith has just returned from El ttiplu, Franklin county, Washington, where he lias spent a week Inspect ing his wheat crop and real estate Interests nnd reports wheat In that vicinity In the best of condition. He has 1,440 acres near Eltopla, In the heart of the Franklin county wheat belt, which Is now five to ten inches high, growing nicely, with a good stand and well siooled out, Riving promise of the best crop In the his tory of that country. Dr Smith has great hopes for that dry district and believes with culti vation nnd settlement the arid lands will naturally reclaim themselves to a largo degree. The government Is now making preliminary surveys at different places with a view to Irri gating several thousand acres now withdrawn from settlement. His report of crop conditions there will he good news to many Umatilla county citizens who are now Inter ested In Franklin county land. Are You a Dyspeptic? Small Herds Should Be Kept to De stroy Weeds In Orchards. A small band of sheep on any farm that Is reasonably well fenced will far more than repay their win ter keep In the weeds which they destroy In summer. It follows, therefore, that a small band of sheep can be kept on any farm under the conditions just stat ed without any cost whatever for the food which they consume, to say nothing of the return which they give In wool and mutton, There are fewer sneep in me United States today, when compared to tho population, tnan there were CO years ago. In 18G0 there .34 sheep per capita and in 1900 there wero only ,52. Fifty years ago there were but tow shoeu oxnorted Into other countries and groat numbers of them were kent for t holr fleeces. Kilty years ago tho largo sheep ranches of Aus tralia and South America had not been started to supply the demand for sheep products as now Orchard and Farm. Good for Children.
