Uln medlum of this Portland, April 8. There is now a little demand from the Orient for flour, but It is not large and most of the coast export mills still remain idle. Late reports from the Orient to local millers say that no actual Improvement in the dumnnd Is antic ipated for the next SO or perhaps GO days, and then business may possibly boom. Today more of tho millers advanc ed tholr quotations on flour tho gen eral advances being In tho neighbor hood of 10c a barrel. Some of the millers put up their quotations Cc, while others went up to lCc. The market Is strong at the new prices, but very little business Is reported. Bluestem Wheat Higher. Another advance of lc a bushel waB made In the quotations on blue stem wheat today and the market Is still showing a llrm tone. There Is so little of this grade of wheat left that the operations in this market may be said to be nominal. The exporters are hardly in the market at all their only buylngs be ing for Sau Francisco account, which needs the wheat very bad. The small stocks that remain unsold are In very strong hands. No Demand for Club Wheat. The market for club or Walla Walla wheat Is very dull. There ls plenty of wheat offering of this grade, but the demand Is small. No late business is reported in this line. Valley Wheat Is Higher. An advance of lc n bushel was made In the former quotations on valley wheat today, but as In blue stem, tho transactions reported are nominal. The millers are willing to buy at the printed quotations, but tho farm ers are asking a premium of about 2c. As they aro not in need of valley so as to compel them to pay that price, they are not buying at all. Nemesis of the Scalpers. Now York, April 8. A movement Is on foot to reorganise the Itallroad Protective Bureau, placing It on a better foundation and making it a permanent Institution. The bureau In Us war on scalpers has saved the railroads many hundred thousands of dollars. Soveral brokers have been convicted and sent to tho penitenti ary, Injunctions have been secured in soveral cities restraining illegal traffic In transportation and tho issu ing of nontransferable tickets has been mado vastly safer. The assessors .found $2,0p0,000 worth of taxable poraonal property this year belonging to Russell Sage. Tho old man swears to but 1200,000 worth, upon which valuation he has paid taxos for many years. Mrs. Honry Watrous, a rollglous maniac of Now Haven, Conn., built a funeral pyre of wood, saturated it with Uorosono and , dollboratoly burned herself to tieatu as a roug Ioiih sacrifice.
