The national census bureau is necking an answer to this inquiry. It is undertaking to secure a record of nil the persons who are sentenced to the various jails, penitentiaries, and other pris ons in the United Stntes during the year 1904. The wardens of the state prisons tlonlsts ever permitted to breath the free nlrl has been defaming, abnsing. vilifying and oppressing the reform ers of Kansas for the past 20 years. Chief among this clique of nrrogant knaves, who were bent on "redeem ing" Kansas, Is the arch-ass. Sena tor Burton, now serving a' six months term In Jail and barred forever from public office, for common, cheap. coarse bribe-taking betrayal of his trust. This Is a day for bonfires and parades among the abused Kansas populists. THE FOOL'S PRAYER. The royal feast wps done; the king Sought some now sport to' banish care. It was never intended for j one man to grow rich and opulent 1 from the necessities of his neighbors ; Nature has stored the electric cur rent, hollowed out the mountain streanis nnd buried the beds of coal fm the use of humanity. It was decreed years ago in that govern-i ment that the people should wear white for three years following the death of a ruler. Soon after this law went into effect, three kings died within 10 years and the people final ly adopted white as the regular col or of dress. Only the highest offic ials can wear a tint of blue in their robes in Korea. men who remain out will soon be out of touch with the live business in terests of the city. The Commercial Association and Its individual mem bers are sought out by strangers lo cating here and the first business associations formed by newcomers are among the active members of this association. To be outside is to be at a disadvantage. The Harrimau system could do nothing to bring Its tributary coun try Into wide notice in the East, so well as through the publication of a monthly magazine of true Western spirit, at Portland. The Sunset .Mag azlne. the Four Track News, the Blue Book and other high class lit erary publications issued by the pas songer departments of great railway systems, have grown to be standards of Information for millions of read ers. Portland is the true gateway to the Orient. She Is the Mecca and chief end of tourist travel to the West. Oregon is rich in scenic beauty, inspiring history and dor mant resources, smoking now through the thousand craters of en terprlse. Such a magazine publish ed In such a city would attract at tentlon to the O. II. & N- Bystem, and its wonderful tributary empires and would soon be a paying investment, under careful management. The O. It. & N. company is inter ested in the growth and progress of Pendleton, She has never failed to respond to the reasonable requests of Pendleton's citizens. It Is hoped that the company sees fit to deny the privileges of decorating the fence around the property on Main street with the flaring showbills that should be consigned to the side streets. A first-class hotel Is now nearly completed opposite the com pany's property and another elegant building 1s to he erected by Muyor W. F. Matlock beside this hotel. It will be unjust to the renters of those buildings to place a public billboard In front of the places of business. If the company desires to fence its property, that Is its business. But the public certainly has a right to ask the company to refuse a place to such unsightly and disgusting ad vertising as appears on the bill boards, especially so on the business streets. and electric lighting currents which the Creator of the world placed at man's disposal. Think of the homes now without the conveniences and luxuries of the age because a grasp ing corporation has secured a per petual franchise and raised the price beyond the reach of the poor! Think of the burdensome taxes being paid year In, year out. by homeowners to bear the expenses of city govern meut, while shrewd, scheming capl talists reap priceless harvests from franchises that belong to the people. Let the snorting monopolists snort at the idea of the people the ig norant masses, as they term them operating a public utility for public use. When such enterprising cities as Eugene vote to own public utili ties, there is some solid reason for that sentiment. Over a quarter of a million do! lars worth of brick buildings are In course of erection and in contem platlon this spring in Pendleton. An lS-foot front on Main street has just rented for five years at $100 per month. Business men have confl dence in the city which produces such evidences of prosperity as these. With Umatilla county back of the city and with government Ir rigation back of the county, In ad ditlon to the matchless wheal belt. this activity promises to be perpet ual. School teachers In several states are agitating laws to pension old teachers, after a certain number of years service. Teachers follow this calling voluntarily, they work short days, reeoive good pay and Cad' Mtfo as cheaply as any other professional people. Why should the state worry over their individual affairs, more than over the minister's, the carpon ter's or tho lightning rod peddler's? It Is not compulsory service. The pension craze Is the curse of the age. It overyuouy is jiensioueu, who will work to pay the pensions? It Is really refreshing to think of an unprincipled Kansas senator serv ing a term for corruption in office in common, stluklug, filthy county jail.
