On Tuesday evening, April 5, Prof.
was McMInn, who has just organized tho
dancing class In this city, will com
plete tho organization of tho Assem
bly Club, a social dancing club, at
Armory hall, at which time the club
will bo formally introduced with its
first grand ball. Tho club consists
of tho leading young people of the

work on tho alterations.
The changes as outlined in tho
East Oregonlan will bo fully carried
out, and when tho place Is turned
over to Postmaster Livermoro, ho
will hardly know It for tho same of
flee. Tho boxes will bo rearranged
and tho work room will bo greatly
enlarged so that there will bo no
danger of tho business outgrowing
tho office during tho Ave years of tho
new lease.
Tho owners of tho building will
put In a now heating system, or rath
or will rearrange tho old one to con
form with the changes to be made
In the room. New and up.to-date
furniture and desks will bo Installed
nd a now flro and burglar-proof safo
will bo bought and placed In tho
money order office. Altogether, thoro
will be In tho neighborhood of 1,000
expended on Improvements alone,
At tho same tlmo tho improve
ments are being effected In tho office
furniture, an effort will bo made to
improvo tho service as well. For
some time there has been a call
for a night mall distribution service,
and if tho plans now being laid carry,
the people will havo tho added con
venlence In a short tlmo.
As It now is, nil mall dropped in
the office after 9 o'clock in tho oven
lng does not leave tho office until
tho following morning. This works
hardship on tho merchants cspoc
tally, as a great deal of business
mall goes out to Portland and tho
west on No. 5, at midnight, and to
the east on No. 6 at 4:45 a. m. It is
Impossible to catch these trains un
loss the letters aro in the office be-
fore 9 o'clock, and if missed, the
west-bound letters have to wait for
No. 1, nt 9 o'clock, and tho east
bound until the next evening.
According to tho plans now under
consideration, a man will be kept In
tho offlco who will make up tho mall
for each of the night trains about
half an hour before Its departure,
Just when tho new arrangement will
go into effect has not been determin
ed, but it will bo commenced ns soon
as possible If tho plan proves feasi
ble and the force can be so arranged
as to provide for the change.

Roys' Athletic Cluo, at the homo of
two of its memoors John and West
brook Dickson when tho club enter
tained their young lady friends.
' Tho club colors, yellow nnd violet,
wero tastefully used as a decoration.
Progressive nnagrams were played,
tho lady's first prlzo being won by
Miss Nora Younger, tho consolation
falling to Miss Kathleen Furnish.

honors for the boys, and Linden Vin
cent second.

noon by Lillian Rend against Molvln
Read. Both of the parties aro resi
dents of Umatilla, whore tho defend
ant Is an engineer on the O. R. &. N.
Tho plaintiff alloges that the de
fendant and she wero married In St.
Paul, Nob.. August 26, 1891. There
aro throe children. Sho alloges era
olty In hor complaint and states that
her husband at one tlmo beat her
with a broomstick and then throw
hor on the bed, whero ho choked her
and flourished a butcherknlfo around
hor head. Sho broke away nnd he
pursued her with a loaded revolver
and challenged her to go out In the
sagebrush nnd fight It out with him.
At another time ho came ooninu
hor and hit hor over tho head with
a pleco of hoso, knocking hor sense
lesB. after which ho kont her con-
fined In her room until tho bruises
had gone from her face.
Tho defendant claims insanity as
his oxcuso for what ho did.
Tho plaintiff asks for $2,000 for
tho support of herself and child, for
an absolute divorce, $50 a month dur
ing tho pendency of tho suit, $250 for
atornoys' fees and $150 for court
fees, together with tho costs and
disbursements of tho action. James
