Animal Being Shipped by Express Makes a Break for Liberty on O. R. & N. Platform. A valuablo Jack, being shipped in a crate by express from Missouri to Washington, made a bold break for liberty on tho O. It. & N. depot plat form this morning, whllo being trans ferred to tho Spokane train. The crato in which tho animal was confined was open at tho top, and while it was resting on tho baggage truck, waiting for tho train, tho Jack leaped out of the crato and landed on his head on tho depot platform, In tho midst of a crowd of admiring stockmen and railroad employes. In tho excitement following tho unexpected leap of tho animal every body wanted to help replace him in his crate, and tho crowd surrounded tho bowlldcrcd animal In such num bers that It was lost sight of for a moment, and Engineer McEvoy, of thcSpokano branch run, was mistaken for tho Jack and placed in tho crato instead. The burial will take place In Olney cemetery, Upon tho request of tho parents of tho doad, girl Prosecuting Attorney Hailoy has been looking Into the facts surrounding her death, but falls to find where criminal proceedings can bo begun against Bert Mont gomory, who is charged with having Induced the girl to leave her homo with him. Tho letter, which Is supposed to bo tho direct provocation of tho sul cldo, was written from Bear Moutl Montana, a small town In the vicinity of Missoula, and contains nothing of an incriminating nature It is slm ply a lovo letter written In tho usual stylo of such epistles, and contains nothing upon which to bnso any charge, or glvo any cluo for an ac tlon. It Is thereforo certain that nothing will bo dono in that direc tion. The principal blamo for tho stray lug away of the girl Is now placed nt tho door of Olllc Maurcr, who is well known In this city, and who has had not tho best reputation for over a year. It was sho who stirred up tho row In her homo near Cold Springs somo months ago and had her father arrested for having beaten her mother. Tho father was not con vlcted, and slnco that tlmo tho daughter has been In this city, most of tho tlmo In tho Columbia lodging hnuso on Main street. It Is claimed that sho becanio acquainted with tho Williamson girl through a mutual friend, and that it was sho who in troduced her into tho circle of men who were the causo of her fall. This, at least, Is tho opinion held by tho attornoy, and for that reason, and becauso ho can find .no evidence to convict anyone of criminal relations with the girl, no action will bo taken by him. ' Tho current month has been tho lightest as to receipt of fines In tho memory of Judge Thomas Fitz Ger ald, by a little over $100. Before this tho smallest amount ever re corded by him in ono month for fines received was $350; but this month thero havo been taken In but $237 so far, from fines. On tho first day of tho month tho business started out with Its usual dash, when tho olllco closed in tho ovenlng tho judge bankod $174. Ho then shut up shop until tho 5tn, when ho had two cases, and In ilo fault of tho fines sent them to jail for threo days each. March 7 ho had 11 cases, and col lected from tho bunch tho munifi cent sum of $5. Tho following day ho had four cases and collected $0, and the next day repeated tho num her of cases, but fell down entirely In tho flno nart of It. On tlio 10th and tho lttli ho bad 12 'casos and got $17.50 out of them. From that tlmo on until today ho had 17 cases and realized $35.bO on tlio lot, making a total of $237, tho lightest In tho h.s tory of tho city for ono month for soveral years. Public Timepiece. Williams, a representative of tho Barber Asphalt Company of Seattle, was In tho city last ovoning on route to Bolso City, whero his company has just completed a largo amount of paving. Ho will return in a few days to interview business mon and property owners of Pendle ton, on' a faVorlto plan for paving at least a portion of Main street. Tho plan which Mr. Williams -will present and which has been cm- ployed with great success in many towns in tho West, is to induce tho property owners to agreo to pavo tho street adjoining their property at their own expense, tho city to is-( suo bonds for tho nmount, tho bonds to bo taxed In annual installments against tho property owners ordering tho pavement. By adopting this plan, any num-1 her of property owners can pave their own property and pay tho city . for tho work In easy payments. This does away with tho burdensome tax on tho city, and permits public spir ited citizens who wish to pavo their property at their own oxponso, to do so. After a portion of the street has been paved, tho genoral improve ment in tho appoaranco of tho prop erty and tho Increased values bo causo of tho paving, would soon in duce othor owners to rean the samo benefit nnd tho ontlro main street' would bo paved in this way, by easy stages, without cost to tho general taxpayer. Mr. Williams will spend several days hero In tho interest of this plan, nnd hopes to interest somo of tho enterprising citizens to make ar rangements for improvements of this kind.
