Bridgeport, Conn., March 24. Miss
Fanny Crosby, tho famous blind
hymn writer, today celobrated her
eighty-fifth birthday In tho full pos
session of all her faculties, but the
one denied her. Miss Crosby lives
with her sister, Mrs. Carrie Illdcr,
and In her old ago Is fully as activo
as In her youth.
Miss Crosby becamo blind in her
Infancy, owing to Improper treat
ment for a fever. When she waB 15
years old she entered the Now York
Institution for tho Blind. She was
so apt In her studies that sho subse
quently received an appointment as
teacher of rhetoric, English gram
mar, Creek, American, English and
Itoman history In tho institution.
While still a teacher sho composed
songs, winch were set to music oy
Georgo F. Root. Among tho best
known are: "Rosalie, tho Prairlo
Flower," "Hazel Dell," "Goodby,
Proud World, I'm (iolng Homo,"
'The Honeysuckle Glen," and
'There's Music In tho Air." Sho also
wrote tho words for the cantatas.
The Flower Queen" and "Tho Pil
grim Fathers."
Miss Crosby. In 1SG4, took up hymn
writing and since that tlmo has writ
ten nearly 3,000 of them, notable
among which Is "Safe In tho Arms of
Jesus." Thero Is seldom a religious
meeting at which ono or more of
Miss Crosby's hymns aro not sung,
and tho deep religious pathos of her
writings has been felt In many lands.

to tho proposed Niagara ship canal,
the commerco of tho Great Lakes
will be represented by ono of the
strongest delegations over sent to
Washington.
Tho project has tho support of J.
J. Hill of the Great Northern, of tho
Lake Carriers' Association, and the
chamber of commerco and other
trade organizations of Minneapolis,
Duiuth, Chicago, Cloveland, liuffalo
and other cities whoso Interests
would bo benefited by tho construc
tion of tho proposed ship canal
around Niagara and tho completion
of tho 1,000-ton barge canal from
Buffalo to tho seaboard. All of tho
various interests are expected to ho
represented at tomorrow's hearing
and If tho project does not receive a
decided boost before the house com
mltteo it will not bo because of lack
of effort on tho part of Its advocates.
