Captain O'Donald, in speaking of
the mission which brings him and
his companion to this country, talks
very interestingly of his history In
South Africa and his people, the
Boers.
Ho and General Joubert intend to
settle in this country and have
picked out Montana as their future
home. They have traveled through
the whole of the Western Continent
and have not seen a country so fa
vorable to their people as the North
wosL From Spokane down to and
through Umatilla county i the best
of all, but that land Is all gone nnd
for that reason the two travelers
have picked on Montana as their
future homes, where there is now
enough vacant land to mako homes
for the whole of the Boer race.
Soon after the war the party start
ed from Africa to find a place where
the dissatisfied Boers could mako
new homes for themselves, and a lo
cality was chosen in Mexico, but'
after all plans had been made and
the tract laid out, the yellow fever
broke out and the project was aban
doned. These men are therefore
not the advance guards of an or
ganized colony, as is generally sup
posed, but will make their report,
which is now just out, to their peo
ple, and It Is expected that by fall
the Immigrants will begin to reach
this country.
The laws, the people and the cus
toms here are more congenial lo the
Boers than any other place, and they
will do better here than In any
c-ouutry seen by me men wno nuve
been searching for them.
The war is not over but the peo
ple want peace, nnd rather than
live whire they are made the slaves
of the English, they will forsake the
homes of their fathers and make
new ones In a foreign land. But
should the fourth and last conflict
come they would leave again to fight
by the side of their brothers In Af
rica in the defense of their rignts
as a race and to avenge their old
wrongs.
Should the liberal party in Eng
land gain control of the government.
however, no one would emigrate
from Africa, but they would remain
there and trust to their friends In
that party to right the wrongs and
to free the country. It is coming to
this, and If the victory comes soon
but few of the Boers will ever reach
this country.

City was told of his father's death.

gines of the division to Portland,
passing through Pendleton about
3:15 yesterday afternoon.
