R. J. SLATER RETURNED
. FROM A MONTH IN THE EAST.
Adams vs. Church Case Was Decided
In Favor of the Plaintiff The East
Generally Is Cold and Disagrees
ble, and Umatilla County Is a Wei
come Relief Mr. Slater Was Ad
mltted to Practice In United States
Supreme Court.
Robert J. Slater, the attorney, re
turned yesterday morning from a
several weeks' visit in Washington,
D. C, and other cities of tho East
He went to Washington to represent
J. H. Adams In tho case of J. H. Ad
ams vs. J. M. Church, ns ndmlnlstra
tor of the estate of R. M. Steele.
The case was tried In tho courts of
this state and appealed to the su
preme court, which ruled for tho do
tendants. The question was over the
point whether or not a man could bo
compelled to observe la contract of
sale made prior to proving up on
government property. The defend
ants claimed it to be contrary to pub
lic policy, and this was sustained by
the supreme court when tho plaintiff
appealed.
Mr. Slater wns very glad to return
to this part of tho state, as tho East
is too cold and disagreeable to suit
his tastes.
It is like coming into a new land
to cross the mountains from the
East. The weather there Is cold
and dark, and ns soon as ,tha moun
tains are crossed spring Is at hand.
While in Washington Mr. Slater
was admitted to practice before tho
supremo court of the United States.
He also attended several sessions or
congress, and on ins return trip slop
ped at several of tho larger Eastern
cities.
