and settled In the West; he worked

grew to fives, while the dandy dudes
who laughed at him, were Idling out
their lives. A homestead on the des

he worked and planted in the sand,

The energies of men are brought
to play.
And hidden valor by occasion met
Leaps to the light, as precious

When earthquakes rend the rock.
The stress and strain
Of war stir men to do their worst
and best.
Heroes are forged on anvils hot
with pain
And splendid courage comes but
with the test.
Some natures ripen and some vir

Only in blood-red soil: some souls

Only In moments dark with death or

This Is the sad hlstorir- Jest which
fate ,
Flings to the world, recurring time

Manv must fall that one may seem

Above the chaos of impending Ills.
Through all the clamor of Insist

Now while the noise of warring na

Each throbbing hour with menaces
to life.
I hear the voice of Progress! Strange
indeed
The shadowed pathways that lead
up to light.
But as the runner sometimes will re

That he may so accumulate his
might.
Then with a will that needs must be
obeyed
Rushes resistless to the goal with
ease.
So the whole world now seem to ret'

Slips back to war, that it. may
speed to peace.
And in that backward step it gathers
force ,
For the triumphant finish of Its
course.

THE OLD JAPAN AND THE NEW.
In old Japan there were few
violent contrasts between rich and
poor, and, in fact, ti.e Industrial plu
tocrat was unknown. The nobly
born were rich. If at all rich, only in
land and rice, and they were not en
vied, as they seem to belong to the
natural order of creation.
But today the tradesman and the
manufacturer, who were once almost
the lowest of mankind, Infinitely
below the tillers of the soli, are be
coming insolently rich and are the
real lords of Japan, while tne chil
dren of Samurai are glad to get
small clerkships from those whom
their fathers despised.
I have been spending much time
In Darkest Tokio of late, and the mi
croscopic misery to be found there
would make a story appalling to
those who fancy that Japan Is noth
ing but swaying lanterns and softly
falling cherry blossoms. Buying and
selling Is conducted on such an In
finitesimal scale among these sub
merged wretches that the sum of six
pence will provide a handsome stock
for a hawker in iiopular lines of
food.
Among these unfortunates who of
ten walk the streets at night for the
want of a half-ponuy to engage lodg
ings on a damp floor swarming with
vermin, one bears tho doctrines of
Proudhon and Ferdinand Lasalle
discussed volubly. Their works have
