I of awo among the women of the
' South.
' Miss Scott reports a very enjoya
'bio trip and is profuse in her praise
of the entertainment provided by
the Atlanta people. She was ques
tioned on all sides concerning Idaho,
and was able to give very brilliant
accounts of this state. The women
of the city were anxious to Itnow
about suffrage and held Idaho as the
banner state of the Union. They
j were greatly Interested In Miss
Scott's reports of the work done by
tho women of this state, and were
encouraged to renewed efforts in
that line for their own state. Boise

I Ground Hog Prophesied Right.
For once at least the ground hog
1 was right. Yesterday rounded up
I the six weeks since the traditional
I annual was supposed to come out of
his lair and gaze about him. This
year when he came out he had an ex

shadow, and may be assumed by the
credulous to have taken full advan

all that Is prophesied to follow such
an event. Walla Walla Union.

ON A LONG TRAVEL.
Traveling Alone for Fourteen Hun

Live With an Aunt Little Fel
low Is Level-Headed and Confident
and Signed Up a Half-Fare Ticket.
Wilford Leivers reached the city
this afternoon from Spokane, and
stepped off the Hunt line train for a
short visit In this city between
trains. Wilford is about 7 years of
age, and had come from Hossland,
li. C, this far on his way to Salt
Lake City, where he will make his
future home with relatives. v
The little traveler lias made the
trip all of the distance alone, and
transferred from the Northern road
at this place to the O. It. & N. for
the remainder of his trip to Salt
Lake.
B. F. Wolfe, the agent of the O.
R. & N was mnkltiK his ticket re
port after the mixed train came in
this afternoon, wnen ho heard some
one asking for a ticket to Salt Lake.
He could not see who it was, but
by craning his neck caught sight of
the top of the seeker's head. Ho In
formed him that It cost $25.80 to
ride to Salt Lake. The little man
searched his pockets and found
about $15. He became pretty badly
excited when he thought he dm not
have enough to pay for his ticket,
and offered his watch to tho ajent
as part payment. A half fare ticket
was made out for him and he was
held up to the window by a traveling
mnn while he signed It.
The mother of the boy Is In Eng

the boy Is now on his way to Salt
Lake to live with an aunt.
RIVAL FOR PANAMA CANAL.
Old Tehauntepec Project Revived
On Paper.
Washington, D. C, March 18.
Washington Is not inclined to take
seriously the report from Mexico
that a company Is about to be rorm
ed under the laws of Missouri with
a capital of $200,000,000 for the pur
pose of constructing an Inter-oceanio
canal to connect the Gulf of Mexico
und the Pacific through the southern
port of Mexico.
8hould such a project be consum
mated It would, of course, result in
a Rreat withdrawal of trade from
the new Panama canal, but officials
here whd are well versed in the sub
ject recall that the project is not a
new one, but almost as old as the
idea of a canal across the Isthmus
of Panama, and there is no ground
for the belief that It is any nearer
realization now than half a century
ago.
With the Panama canal about to
be rushed to completion capital
would not likely Invest In the Mexi
can scheme, while the Mexican gov.
ornment could ndt be rolled upon
for financial support because the
building of such a waterway would
mean ruin to the national railroad of
Mexico on the isthmus of Tehaunte
