Tho activity of tho Grange In
Eastern Oregon Is one of tho most
important movements made In this
district for 10 yoars. At this time
thcro nro six branches of this or
ganization In Union and Umatilla
counties, with a total of over 300
members.
Tho three branches In tho Milton
and Freowater districts have about
140 members and the three In Union
county about 160. All of them nro
adding to their membership con
stantly, and aro preparing the way
for new organizations later In the
season.
Tho organization calls (6 mind the
Farmers' Alliance of tho 90s, which
was strong in both Umatilla and
Union counties.
In Union county that organization
saved to tho farmers In one season,
about $5,000 by purchasing machin
ery and binding twlno, of n local Im
plement houso, in wholesale. The
farmers clubbed together and order
ed a carload of supplies for harvest,
and by this means, In several towns
In the county, mado a saving of this
amount In one season.
So far, In this and Union counties,
tho Grango is in tho social stage,
anil no business organization has
been attempted yet, but It will grad
ually grow Into a business organiza
tion, as it has in tho Willnmetto
valley, taking an activo part In pub
lic affairs, and especially in county
expenditures.
The preamblo nnd general objects
of tho Grango arc as follows:
PREAMBLE.
Profoundly Impressed with tho
truth that tho National Grango of
the United States should definitely
proclaim to the world Its general ob
jects, wo hereby unanimously make
this declaration of purposes of the
Patrons of Husbandry.
GENERAL OBJECTS.
1. United by tho strong and faith
ful tie of agriculture, wo mutually
resolve to labor for the good of our
order, our country and mankind.
2. We heartily endorse tho motto:
"In essentials, unity; In non-essentials,
liberty; In all things charity.
.1. We shall endeavor to advanco
our cause by laboring to accomplish
the following objects:
To develop a better and higher
mauhood and womanhood among
ourselves. To enhance the comforts
and attractions of our homes, and
strgonthen our attachments to our
pursuits. To foster mutula under
standing and co-operation. To main
tain inviolate our laws, mid to emu
late each other In labor, to hasten
the good time coming. To reduce
our expenses, both Individual and
corporate. To buy less and produce
more, In order to make our farms
selt'-susfalnlng. To diversify our
mips, and crop no moro than wo
can cultivate.
To condonso the weight of our ox
ports, selling less In the bushel and
moro on hoof and In tleeco; less in
lint, and more In warp and woof. To
systematize our work, and calculato
intelligently on probabilities. To
discountenance tho credit system,
the mortgage system, tho fashion
system, and every other Bystcm tend
ing to prodigality and bankruptcy.
We propose meeting together, talk
ing together, working together, buy
ing together, selling together, and,
general, acting together for uur
mutual protection and advancement,
as occasion may require. Wo shall
avoid litigation as much as poslblo
by arbitration in the Grange. Wo
shall constantly strivo to securo en
tire harmony, good will, vital broth
erhood among ourselves, and to mnko
our order perpetual. Wo shall earn
estly endeavor to suppress personal,
local, sectional and national preju
dices, all unhealthy rivalry, all sol'
fish ambition. Faithful adherence
to these principles will insuro our
mental, moral, social and material
advancement.
