Birth, Marriage and Death Are Only Worth Mentioning Marriage Sim ple Matter That is Easily Dissolved - by a Divorce Six Hundred Thous and More Men Than Women in Ja pan. The greatest events In the ordi nary life of a Japanese are birth, marriage and death, each being cele brated with formality. Eggs are com mon but honorable presents on such occasions, In addition to 450 eggs, the first American child born In Jllto was favored with numerous other gifts. New Year's day is celebrated as n national birthday and the Individual birthdays are not specially observed. The wedding ceremony is simple. The feature Is the three-three-nlne-times. Bride and groom drink three times out of three cups of .different sizes. This is a social sidelight on the wedding ceremony, and correspond ents with the western wedding re ception. .Marriage is n civu con tract only, and Its legality rests in the registration. As this Is often omitted, divorces are easy and fre quent, which Is a handy thing In a land where there are buo.ouu more men than women. The Jap Is a fatalist and death has no terrors for him. Funeral cer emonies are expensive and elaborate. The Shinto rites are plainer thnn the Buddhist. In the former tho cof fins resomble ilotv of the ODoVeiit, Lut In the lat'.ar the coffin is small and square, so that the corpse is placed in a sitting position, tne neaa boat down between the knees. White Is the mourning color and the code Is strict. In addition to wearing mourning the mourners ab stain from moat. Regular dates for visiting the grave arp 7th, 14th, 21st, 35th, 49th and 100th days, and the 1st, 3d, 7th, 13th, 23d, 27th, 33d, 37th, 50th and 100th years. Japanese national holidays are: Four Sides' Worship, January 1; First Beginning festival, January 30; Klgen-Setsu, February 11; spring festival. March 22 (about): Jimmu Tenno festival, April 3; autumn fes tival, September 24 (about); Kan name festival, Ovtober 17; emperor's birthday, November 3; Nllnamo festi val, November 23. In addition there aro many flow er festivals, such as the plum, cher ry, wistaria, iris, morning glory, lo tus, maple and othors, on which days tho populace goes out to view the blossoming trees, shrubbery nnd plants. The common games of the Japs are chess, "go," a complicated game rosembllng chockers; parches! and cards, Flowor cards and poetical quotations nro popular. Children And nmusomonts with kites, tops, hattlodoro and shuttlecock, snow mo, dolls, cards and other games. Tho dpolslvonoss with which tho Koreans of districts occupied by the Japanese affirm their loyalty to Ja pan, Is only trumped by tho enthusi asm with which Koreans In nusslnn districts 1 ray for tho succoss of Hussion arms.
