New School House at Echo Is Built On Plans Once Made for a Pendle ton Building Schools at all the Points Mentioned are Conducted Up-to Date In Every Respect. Supt. Nowlln has returned from a trip to the schools of Echo, Umatilla and Foster, and finds them In the best of condition. At Echo tho school has two teach ers, Miss Francella Duncan being the principal, assisted by Miss Celestlna Moorhouse. Tho condition of x.te school was found to bo very cood, tho work being carried well In hnnd by tho ladles having It in charge. Tho new school houso at Echo Is nearly ready. The painters are now at work on the building, whllo tho carpenter work has all been finished. This building was built on the plans drawn by Theodoro Howard, some seven years ago for tills city. At the time It was decided that the city could not afford to build, nnd the school board of Echo seeing the draft of the building, accepted It ns the one needed for the' city. Tho school at Umatilla conducted by C. G. Morey, is one of tho best in the county. Mr. Morey hns proven by his work that he is n good In structor, and is skilled In the art of managing children. J. F. Slaughter at Foster, Is also conducting a very succesjful school at that little city. Mr. Nowlln found the school to be well handled and the children to be well graded. It. & N. westbound passenger train, due to pass here at 9:10 this morning, was delayed until after 4 o'clock today, by a freight train wreck, on the mountain, about 20 miles east of Baker City. Wesley Matlock returned last night from California and Southern Oregon, where he has been on an extended visit In the Interest of his property In Alaska. While away Mr. Matlock visited some of the principal mines In Southern Oregon and California, In vestigating their machinery, and at San Francisco bought machinery for the development of his mines In the north.
