The council met in ndjourned ses sion Wednesday evening, and the on ly business of Importance was the final passage of nn ordinance provid ing for putting in a little over 9,000 feet of four-Inch water mains, a por tion of which goes in the First Ward and tho remainder north of the rail road track. Tho estimated cost Is about $4,0..0. Tho adoption of the ordinance is considered to bo a mat tor of Justice and for a policy, inas much as It will provide tho possibil ity of a water supply to a great many taxpayers within the corporate lim its who have not hitherto been able to become patrons of the water sys tem. The extension of the mains produced will largely increase the list -of water consumers. La Grande Chronicle. Stock are in Good Order. H. E. Labadle, a stockman, who has some herds in Southern Umatilla county, but does most of his ranging In Wasco and Sherman counties in winter, was a passenger on yester day afternoon's train to Baker. He came through by way of Susanvllle, and was asked 1" he had heard any thing concerning stock suffering for lack of feed, "I heard of several instances where the feed was short," said he, "and I was told that a number of horses and cattle had been sent over Into the Umatilla country, but that there had been any loss I very much question. If it had been serious I certainly would have heard about it. I have had more of a loss this year from my sheep that I sent last fall I sent from their summer quarters In the Cascades, beyond Prlnevllle, into Lane county than I have had with my stock on the higher ranges on this side.
