a Sister, is Lured Into an Opium
Den in Portland.
Olive Mcintosh, the 14-year-old
daughter of W. F. Mcintosh, living
car Weston, was found by Dotectlve
H. H. Hawlcy yesterday, at the Es
mond Annex in Portland, -where she
had been taken by a strange woman
to spend the night.
The little girl was on her way to
Battle Ground, "Washington, to visit
a sister, and while near The Dalles,
she became acquainted with a

strange woman, who enticed her to a
room, In which throe young hoodlums
were smoking opium, on their ar
rival In Portland.
The girl indignantly refused to
smoke the opium proffered her, and
was taken In charge by Mrs. Cox, the
landlady at the Esmond, and on her
Information, Jnmes Cooley, "Walter
Smith and May Morris were arrested
and fined $100 each for frequenting
an opium den, and were then bound
over in the sum of $300 ench to the
grand jury, for enticing a young girl
Into a disreputable house.
Sale of Fine, Fat Hogs.
Schwartz & Greulich today bought
a wagon load of fat hogs from J. B.
Cooley of Cold Springs. The hogs
were In the best of condition, and
brought 6 cents a pound on foot.

Tho present capacity of the Pendle
ton Elegtric Company is now over
taxed, so there is no hope of the new

electric people. As the machinery
will have to bo run by electricity. It
seems that the plan will necessarily
be droppeo for the time, at least.
If some plan can be arranged
whereby the company can get power,
it la very probable that the plant
n-ni ho mit In at an early date, hut
if no power can be furnished, Pendle
ton will lose this chance, it is a cer
tain thing that the company would
put the plant here If it could get the
power.
MUSICAL EVENT.
Tonight's Performance at the Pres
byterian Church.
Prof. LaContc, the pianist, has
promised to play at the Presbyteri
an church musical social tonight, and
the finest piano in the city has been
placed for his use. How many num
bore he will execute, and what they
will he. cannot be told until the closu
of the evening, as his part In the en
tertainment Is supplementary to tho
regular program, and only securea
by solicitation and the promise that
he could have the use of a first-class
Instrument.
The regular program has been pre
pared with great care, and will be
rendered to tho last detail as origin
ally arranged and participated In by
the best local talent, both musical
and elocutionary. Prof. LaConte's
part will not bo an Interruption, noi
yet an amendment to tho program. It
will bo outside of it that much
moro than the committee was able
to promise the public before securing
bis services.
As a special favor to the church
people the management of tho Scott
Music House insisted upon postpon
ing tho musical at their parlors
whon they learned that Prof. La
Conte was wanted by the church
people. Tho music house musical
will tako place some evening early
next week.
A STRONG SOLICITOR.
East Oregonian Circulation Man Gets
a Subscription in a Novel Way.
A subscription to the Daily East
Oregonian, for one year, was taken
by Fred Lockiey. tho circulation
manager some time ago. In a novel
way.
Mr. I.ockley solicited A. Kunkel.
tho Implement dealer of this city to
send tho Dally East Oregonian, to"
bis branch Implement house in
Athena, and Mr. Kunkol, being of a
jovial nature, began to banter Lock
ley, for a wrestling match. Instead of
talking subscription with him.
It was finally agreed that thoy
would wrestle, and on tho wrestling
match Bhould dopend whether Lock-
ley sent Kunkel tho paper free for a
year, or whether Kunkol ordered It
a year in advance.
The match was a long and hard
one, tho men boing equally matched,
but finally Lockloy throw Kunkol,
tearing off about halt of a new pair
of pants in the task.
Kunkel paid for a yoar'a aubscrip
tlon to tho paper.
ARRESTED AT HELIX.
Two Men Who Were Carrying Con
cealed Weapons.
J. A. Illakloy loft this morning for
Helix, where bo was called to tako
chargo of a couple of men who had
been arrested for carrying concealed
woapons. Tho mon aro strangers In
that placo and wore on a drunk, and
when arrested woro found to bo arm
ed with razors and knives. Thoy will
bo brought to the county Jail and held
for trial.

work was good, as also tho choruses,
whllo the acrobatic work was some

dleton audience. The jokes were

Simon Saw Company of Portland, Is
a guest at the Hotel Pendleton. Mr.
Mackonzie Is one of the oldest trav
eling men on the road, and is becom

that he will soon take chargo of the
Hotel Dayton, which place he will
manage in tho future.
