H. & N., Is In the city from Bingham Springs. Walla Walla Union. W. O. Minor, the prominent breed er of Shorthorn cattle, of Heppner, Is In the city to attend the sale of the Wade cattle tomorrow. Mrs. Gordon Menzies of Walla Wal la, is visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Swnggart of this city, for a few days. Miss Coyle of Walla Walla, re turned to her home this morning, after a short visit in the city as the guest of Miss Winnie Prlvett. D. F. Davenport, general agent for the New York Mutual Life Insurance Company, Is in the city today on bus iness connnected with his company. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Bannister are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Perry. Mr. Bannister Is one of the prominent wheatraisers of the coun ty and resides at Weston. Mrs. R. j1. Tweedy returned to her home at Washtucna, Washington, this morning, after a week's visit with her father, J. R. Means of this city, and with other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. Heulet of Heppner, were the guests of friends In' the city yesterday. Mr. Heulet is a young business man of Heppner, and was here in the interest of his business. E. Kiddle of Island City, principal owuer of the flouring mills at La Grande, Union and Island City, and one of the most extensive stock ship pers of Eastern Oregon, is in the city today on business. A. N. Gilbert of Salem, is In the city to attend the Wade cattle sale. Mr. Gilbert is the proprietor of one of the largest grocery businesses in Salem, and is a well-known republi can leader of the valley. I. L. Patterson, the collector of in ternal revenue at Portland, Is a guest of the Hotel Pendleton. Mr. Patter sou has a large herd of blooded stock in the valley, and is here to look over the Wade cattle with a view of buying. , B. Kidder, who resides two miles below the city on the Umatilla river, says the foot bridge erected across the river by private citizens on the south side, near his residence, has been washed out by high water. A cable bridge is now talked of. Fred Gelbel, proprietor of the Fair store at La Grande, was in the city yesterday evening, for the pur pose of meeting with a dry goods drummer, from whom a supply of summer goods was ordered In con nection with other merchants from surrounding towns. Reports from the Hudson Bay dis trict say that Harold Goodman has lost 1C head of ynarling calves, with a dlseuso which has been pronounced to be dropsy by Walla Walla veteri narians. The calves swell up under tho breast and in the legs and die in a few days after first becoming afflict ed with the disease. From Its rav ages among Mr. Goodman's cattle it Is thought that the disease must bo contagious, but Dr. J. Christie, of this elty, deputy state Inspector, and a member of the state veterinary board, says that dropsy is not contagious, and that this disease is not dropsy. from the report he has heard of It. Dr. Christie expects to visit the herd immediately, and ascertain the true nature of the disease, and take steps to prevent Its spread. While other herds In that vicinity havB not Buffered from tho disease, It is evident that it is not highly con tagious and Dr, Christie does not an ticipate anything serious from it. ' Stock In Umatilla county are in ex cellent condition this spring, from the standpoint of health and tlesh, and with the exception of a few slight cases of mange, there Is no dis ease of any kind existing In the county.
