Beaver I.ako, in Okanogan county, is dluailpearliiB. This body of water lias neon tho favorite fishing and hunting resort bh long as people liv ing in ilodio camp can romomber. The luko covers several acres of ground and Is located about four miles northwest of Ilodio camp. Its Erauuai disappearance is tho cause of much commont and speculation among settlers of tho locnllty, who ltnow of no reason for tho disappear ing of the wator." Tho lako has boon very much in appearance like other lakes in tho Okanogan county, and thoro has been no tnought of It having a 'sub terranean outlet. Last October tho water began to disappear. Late In 'November tho fnko frozo over. Slnco then' tho Ice and wator both havo been disappearing and now there is -nothing left but a mud puddlo with water about six Inches deep In tho center and a thin coat of Ice. Wa ter drains Into tho lako from two springs, but slnkB Into the ground as fast as It comes in, The phenomenon hns never occur red before to the knowledge of any white man, but some old Indians any the same thing occurred years ago, before any wblto man had settled on .the reservation. Some people be lieve the lake to bo on tho crater of an extinct volcano nnd many theories are advanced for tho dlsappenranco of tho wator. Correspondent in Ex aminer. Elks Would Protect Elks. Tiie Spokane Elks are taking steps to preserve tho few remaining elk in the state of Washington. With this end in view the order has passed resolutions petitioning the represen tatives of this state to use all their powers In making the Olympla forest reserve a game preserve The reso lution Is as follows: "Itesolved, That in order to pro tect the fow elk yet remaining" in tho state of Washington, and to prevent their wanton destruction, it is imper ative that tho entire Olympic forest reserve lie made a game preserve; and that It is the unanimous senti- j mont of the lodge that the represon-j tatlves or tins sinio ni wasmiigion, V. C. ho petitioned to uso their best CENTENARY BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY. A Most Important Event In the His tory of the Christian Religion The Society Has a "Drift" in the Direction of Church Unity, Espec ially Noticeable on the Continent of Europe Day Will Be Observed the World Over. Loudon, March 5 In theso stir ring times, when war and prepara tions for war aro engrossing the pub lic mind, It Is pleasing to note the extraordinary plans that havo been made for the observance tomorrow of what has been designated "Uni versal Hlhle Sunday." The day has been sot aside for celebration of tho centennial of tho British and For eign Hlhle Society, Which was fouud ed March 7, 1804. Considering the controversial trend of the times. It would have been sufficiently noteworthy to arouse comment had the united demonstration been limited to tho various Christian communions of Great Britain. Walla Walla States man. Heavy Snow In Mountains. I. Harris returned yesterday from the Longly ranch about 18 miles up tho river from this city, where ho has about 75 head of cattle winter ing, and Btates that tho snow is deeper than he has seen it at this time of the year since ho has been running stock In that section. He says tho snow on tho Longly Mead ows is now n foot and a half deep, and In the canyons It Is from four to six. Ho has feed on hand stilllelent to feed his herd for tho next 40 days. It Is tho opinion that lr It should turn warm and continue so for a few days all previous records for high water would bo broken. La Orande Observer. Worse Brand of Hoodlums. Haker City boys, apparently, are worse than tho hoodlums of The Dalles, as the following from the Democrat will fully prove: "There are several young scoundrels about M or 1C years of ago In the city who are In tho habit of spitting upon lit tle girls as they meet them upon the street nnd otherwise Insulting them. An incident of tho kind o curred last night about dusk near the Democrat office and tho father of tho little girl has the young man spotted, and as soon as he catches him will punish him as he deserves." There should be a whipping post for such cowardly villains. The Dalles Chronicle. Infant Found In the Snake. The body of an Infant has been found In the Snake river at the mouth of Penewawa creek, and is supposed to have come from Lewis ton, Idaho. The Infant was fully ma lured, and appears to have been In the wator two or three weeks. Wal la Walla Union. race, language and sect being merg ed In the great bond of common her itage tho charter of, salvation as contained in the Word of God. March 6 Bible Sunday. Among tho earliest to Indorse the suggestion that March 0 should be observed as Bible Sunday wore the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. Tho Idea was also taken up with enthusiasm by the Nonconform ists, Including the Baptists, the Con gregatlonallsts and Society of Friends, all denominations of Meth odists, the Moravians and tho Pres byterians. Advices received at the headquar ters of the society show that the day will ho observed In almost every part of the civilized world. In the British colonies tho Idea has been greeted with universal approval. The Metropolitan of Rupert's Land and Brlmato of all Canada, tno Arch bishop of Sydney, tho Archbishop of the West Indies and tho Archbishop of Cape Town have written cordially indorsing the observance ot the day. The chief representatives of non Episcopal churches in the colonies havo responded w.ch equal readi ness, and the proposal has received thp hearty sanction of tho Dutch He formed Church In South Afrlcn. A Promise of Church Unity, But the most significant item in the huge program Is the bringing In to line of the Protestant church on the continent of Europe, and estab lishing a link between those that are most widely Indorsed on minor points. The Archbishop of Upsala, in the name of the bishops of Swe den, has promised the co-operation of all their clergy. The Danish bis hops have unanimously resolved to observe the day, and similar resolu tions have been passed by tho con sistory of the Protestant state church of Saxony, and by the Lu therans and Calvinists of Hungary. II Is obvious that such a festival as this could only be organized by an institution absolutely catholic In Its alms, world-wide in its work, and unrestricted by tho morely national Interest. The object of the society, briofly stated, is to translate the Holy Scriptures Into tho various languages of the world, and circu late them without note or comment, free of charge in cases of necessity, but otherwise at prices, irrespective of the original cost, which bring them within easy reach of tho poor. During tho hundred years of Its exis tence the British Society has distrib uted moro than 180,000,000 volumes In about 370 languages, and at a to tal expenditure of $70,000,000. Colds Cause Pneumonia. Ono of tho most romarkablo cases of cold, doop-seated on the lungs, causing pneumonia, is that of Mrs. Oortrudo E. Fenner, Marion, Ind., who was entirely cured by tho uso of Ono Minute Cough Cure. She savn: "Tho coughing and straining so weak ened mo that I ran down in wolght from 148 to 02 pounds.
