ter Months When Trees Are Bare.
Owing to the incrcaso of fruit
pests In some parts of Idaho, tho ag
ricultural experiment station of that
state Is making extensive experi
ments In the manner of destroying
the different kinds oi insects and
pests that are being Imported into
that state.
In the northern counties of tho
state, the apple aphis has greatly in
creased during tho past two years,
and not very many fruit districts are
now free from It. Out of tho many
districts represented In the Idaho ex
hibit, at the Ogden Irrigation Con

rious kinds of fruit pests, and that
was Mann's creek, which won the

Settled localities by a slage route of
almost a day's drive.
Wherever the railroads touch and
fruit Is shipped extensively, the pests
are present and young orchards are
being, closely guarded to prevent in
fectlon.
The Idaho experiment station be'
lleves that winter spraying of fruit
trees will kill the aphis, as the in'
sect is said to spend the winter on
the bark of the trees, where It can
bo reached by the fluid, very sue
cessfully, after tho leaves fall from
the trees.
According to Eastern orchnrolsts
the aphis has two distinct foods, one
grain and grass tho other tho tree.
It is claimed the aphis is actually
carried from the trees to the wheat
stalks and grass by ants, in the
month of June, and after being nur
turcd on uie suculent stalks , until
about the middle of September, the
aphis Is again transported from the
stalks of grass back to the trees by
the ant, where they remain during
the winter months, and here the eggs
are laid ready to be hatched in the
early spring.
The Idaho station will try winter
spraying, with a view to killing tho
unhatched eggs, wii.le on the bare
bark and in the crevices of the trees.
Experiments were tried with pure
kerosene oil, one-third kerosene and
two-thirds water ana one-fifth kero
sene and four-fifths water. With the
pure kerosene spraying fluid many
shoots of the trees were killed, but
no eggs hatcned. With the one-

neither Injured in the least, but
many of the aphis eggs hatched out.
With tho third solution or tho one-
fifth koroseno opraylng fluid tho
foliage waa normal and tho treo very
thrifty, but many of tho limbs wore
covered with clusters of the live In
sects, within a few days after the
spraying.
While tho puro kerosene Is some
what dangerous to a weakly treo, 11
Is certain death to tho aphis, and
will penetrate to the remotest crev
ice, whero the eggs are deposited.
With a strong healthy treo, four
years old or over, thero Is no danger
of Injuring the tree, nor tho crop of
fruit, although many of tho tender
shoots may be retarded, and tho
foliage uneven. The utmost enro is
needed to spray successfully with
this, and the spraying must be done
just before tho buds burst out.
